Would you spend $500 for a set of Fender Strat pickups?

Sure, if money meant nothing to me. Josefina ain’t winding pickups no more. She’s a legend.

My first thought was, no. Then I watched the video. That guitar sounds really nice.

No, I wouldn't spend than kind of money on a set. They're probably fine pickups, but that last Nth degree of fine isn't worth the extra $400 to $440 to me. I'd spend $60-70 on a set of great pickups and the remainder on a guitar to put them in.

The price point is marketing, not value. That's the way a lot of marketing works. Way back when I was a co-owner of an antique/modern shop, if something didn't sell, and didn't sell, and didn't sell, we'd raise the price of it. It usually sold to someone who equated price with value.

I agree that they sound good in that video.....but what struck me was, he emphasizes how, being hand-wound, every pickup will be unique and have its own characteristics. So, do I have to try a dozen different sets to find some I like? With machine-wound pickups, and their "assumed" consistency, every set should be almost identical, and I simply buy a set I like.....no?
The other guitarist in the band I'm playing in is a real "gear whore", and I mean that in the kindest way. He probably owns close to ten high-quality guitars, like custom shop Strats, Teles, several Les Pauls, PRS, etc. Last night at practice he again commented on and asked about my trusty Telecaster and its pickups. I (again) explained I'm now using the Bootstrap Pickup's Palo Duro Telecaster set, with a middle Strat-like p/up Ryan at Bootstrap made for me. I also mentioned how reasonably priced they were, and so no....I wouldn't likely pay $500 for a set of pickups, when I'm VERY happy with three I paid less than $100 for.....:)

Nah. There are so many amazing sounding pickups on the market for far less than that.

But you know, plenty of guys will pay that kind of money for these.

    Prestige is a helluva drug.

If it made me sound 4x better than I can play I would. Unfortunately such pickups don't exist

Not unless the best pickup guy in my time zone comes to my house & personally winds them in front of me.

What will fender do when they run out of veteran pickup winders?
Charge $600 bucks for Sharon from the Cafeterias pickups?
    Megan's from accounting?

I hope these ladies are getting a fair share of the profits.

    .

If you come from a perspective of $100 pickup set then the $500 set is crazy.
But if you come from a perspective of a $3,500 guitar of which $500 is due to the pickups then it's not such a far off Marketing dream.

    Roll of wire: $25
    Magnets: $5
    Bobbin/Flat-work: $10

    Winder: $15 sewing machine motor
    ...

    Nope sorry.
I'm not that sure if I'd spend $500 for a Guitar these days.
Maybe $500 for an Amplifier, that's a possibility.

No not when someone like Jason Lollar or Lindy Fralin or others has studied those pickups in depth and is arguably just as good as she is and will sell you pickups for half that.
