I rarely ever listen to music unless I'm playing along anymore. I'd much rather play.

I'd much rather play. I realized long ago that one of the keys to becoming good at guitar was to like the sound of your own playing better than listening to music.

Hmmmm, tough call. I really enjoy listening to music, but it invariably leads me to picking up my guitar to try learning what I have just heard.

I don't listen to full albums at a time like I used to... random songs or utube explorations mostly...
or our own members music posted here... I enjoy that and appreciate the effort involved putting your own stuff out there....

I figure.. it's all on there... every rock song you've ever heard is on YOUR guitar somewhere...

I owe it to myself to make stuff up and I get pleasure from doing that .. like the greats did...

.. as opposed to being a entertainer type who needs a lot more material from all sources....

I wish I had enough time to hear and play everything ... and every instrument. It's hell I tell ya.

Would you rather watch porn, or make porn?
Thats about how I feel about it.
(But watching is still O.K. sometimes)

Wow, I'm not alone. I hate listening to music. I've heard everything that will ever be done with it, I feel. I know that, mathematically, I must be wrong, but all I need is a few seconds of something to get the gist. Still, I love the surprises. Amy Winehouse being the biggest.

Love listening to music, but I can only hear so much "great" music before I fell compelled to try and make some.

I LOVE listening to it, which makes me really inspired to MAKE it. It's a cycle. I really lose myself in both.

I can't not have either in my life in huge quantities

I could live forever with no tv, no phone, no Internet.

Depends on my mood and what I'm doing. Few greater pleasures in the world than laying back and listening to something I enjoy. Or getting fired up by a song when I'm doing something physical and just letting the music take me away. It's almost primal.

But, there is no feeling like making music. It is the closest thing to true magic that we have. I shape my fingers in a certain way on the fretboard, strike a specific set of strings with just the right pressure and angle and if I do it all correctly I create a sound from nothing, a sound that hopefully conveys what I feel as I play it to someone standing clear across a room. If that isn't sorcery I don't know what is.

I listen to music at pretty much every possible opportunity...I also love playing it. To me, asking which I prefer is incomprhensible. It's like saying which do you prefer: a good meal or a funny joke.

I especially love listening to music while driving. My tastes are all over the place and I can go through different moods at the drop of a hat, or occasionally I'll get stuck on one thing for a few days or weeks.

There's also times where I don't feel like listening to music and just turn on sports talk.

As far as listening vs playing, I give playing the slight edge...but they're kind of 'one in the same' to me.

    Interesting question.
As I age, I'd much rather play it, but listening to it also an
indispensable ingredient to my happiness/well being.
I am absolutely addicted to my passion/art.
For better or worse, it defines me.
I am, at 55, just beginning to understand the "how to" of music.
    Kinda' late, I know.
