I've been thinking about the story where Keith Richards sees Chuck Berry's guitar in the case, wants to play it, takes it out, and then Chuck sees him and decks him a good one. So here's the question: would you have done the same? I suppose the corollary is whether it was morally permissible.

My take: what Chuck did was entirely reasonable. Keef was being a jerk. You don't just pick up another person's instrument without permission. If you do, you should be prepared to accept the consequences. You never know how sensitive they might be about that stuff.

My general policy, in fact, is not only don't I touch somebody else's instrument without permission, I don't even ask to do so. Ever. Asking puts them in a potentially awkward spot where they have to say no and look impolite doing it. I've been in that awkward spot on the other end, and it's no fun.

Seriously? Absolutely not. Unless the guitar was being stolen, violence is the wrong response... no matter how good a yarn it makes.

My 4 guidelines to a happier safer life...

    1:Don't touch another man's woman

    2:Don't touch another man's car

    3:Don't touch another man's guitar/amp

    4: Don't open another man's refrigerator

    Unless you are INVITED.

He had the right to do it. I may have done the same thing if in the same circumstances. Considering how much KR ripped off from CB, he hot off easy.

I was in a group with some old school cats a little while back. Bass player had a lot of stories about being a musician in the 60's/70's and going around the chitlin' circuit. Fist fights, pulling out pistols, hardcore drama on a frequent basis. Your instrument was your gold mine, that thing wasn't cheap.

It's a different outlook that Chuck had on his guitar I'd suspect.

As much as I would like to say I'd do the same thing...

That would basically be the equivalent of feeding myself to a pack of hungry wolves.

Now if he offered, I'd probably have a biblical moment followed by a very loud High-school girl cry.

I'm not going to research the story but I tend to doubt certain versions.

No...HELL no I wouldn't hit someone for playing my guitar. Except Prince....

I heard it that chuck was playing and Keef went over and messed with chucks tone settings on the amp , when Chuck prettied Keef up, at least thats how Keef relayed it in the interview.

I've been there , restraint and 15 body guards and one guitar tech that was happy to explain the details to me, I didnt want to loose the moment , I was priviledged to be there.

Yeah? After all I've read about Kieth's relationship with music I'm tempted to proclaim him to be conjoined at the soul with the song. To him, music isn't the best thing...it's the ONLY thing. I'm sure Chuck finally realized it as well...

If you hit someone for being a jerk, you are also being a jerk. Do you want to live in a world where whoever is the best puncher is king? Me neither.

Keith has told the story himself, and it was over playing Chuck's guitar.

Generally I don't let just anybody grab one of my guitars, but with someone like Keef there would be the knowledge that he wouldn't bash on it. I have let total strangers (to me) play my guitars at gigs, but they were always friends/acquaintances of one of the other band members and were vetted by whichever band member before I agreed to it. Never had a problem with any of those guys, other than the fact that some of them were wicked killer players and it was hard to strap back on after they did their thing.

Idk I'd probably go with that, as long as that's as far as it went.

I mean disputes wouldn't last long and it would certainly establish a pecking order pretty quickly.

    I'm in.
