So proposition: Beatles John, Paul, Ringo and Keith Richards.

Positive: Keith kicks Paul's a**. No Honey Pie.

    Negative: Maybe no Layla album.

It might have prevented all of that silly "music hall" stuff that Paul kept coming up with.

No one thinks they would have been a better "rock" band? Lennon backed by Richards. No takers?

I don't think Richards has the melodic sensibility or vocal ability to mesh with the mop tops, on the other hand, he probably would've had an affair with Yoko. Not sure what kind of chaos that would've caused.

The question might be better if Brian Jones were the one replacing Harrison...

When I hear Richard's playing in '64 and think of what Harrison was doing then (on similiar rockers like 'Roll over Beethoven'.....and then the added virtuosity demonstated on songs like 'Til There was You'....I prefer Harrison with the Beatles)

Sorry, I just don't think that Keith Richards is all that good - not that George was exactly a guitar god himself, but he was adequate and could sing harmony.

And Keith wasn't from Liverpool, so the others would have kicked his little cockney butt!

I'll give you the vocals but doesn't have the "melodic sensibility"

Nah. Those four guys had a special chemistry. None of them were as good seperately as they were together, talented as they were/are.

When I think Keef I think riffs not necessarily melody. Mick Taylor and Billy Keys are responsible for my favorite Melodies in Stone songs. The Stones have some good ones but not as diverse and complex melodies as The Beatles though. At least in my opinion.

George knew what a melodic riff was.

Keith wrote most of the melodies (with exceptions) up to the mid 70s.

I got a few of those melodies stuck in my head.

Writing songs with Lennon. I could think of worse combos.

But if you posed the question in reverse, J P G R (one of them) subbing into the Stones ?

    On this forum ?

You'd have some takers. I mean c'mon ! They're the St Beatles ! Any one of them could improve any band !

No - music hall dreck like like Rocky Raccoon, When I'm 64, Honey Pie, Martha My Dear, Yellow Submarine, etc...

Why all the George hate? Harrison was an excellent player, and obviously quite underrated.

Why not the Beatles without Ringo? Imagine them with Charlie Watts? Or Keith Moon? or Bonzo???

I think the real question is "was Billy Preston a double secret agent?"
