William, thanks for the kind words. My wife and I really are happy. Perfect marriage? Of course not. She does want the best for me and always has. We've been through a lot together in our 20+ years together. I think the people saying "leave her" are kidding (I hope!). If not, well, they are talking out of their rears. Thanks to all for the encouragement and great ideas!

She's smart enough not to do a per pound deal.

I started drinking a protein shake with a scoop of a fruit and vegetable concoction added to it and lost 15 pounds without doing anything. I was just doing it because I don’t eat well and don’t like most vegetables and it just happened. Good luck.

Are you going for it? It is a win/win combo. -30 lbs. = $800 guitar. Added benefits in the health department, both mental and physical. I'd accept that short time contract. Lord knows how many tougher things I've done to earn $800. Once again good luck.

That would definitely not sweeten up the deal.

Congrats on having a wife that loves you and cares about your health and well being. You’ve already won!

Drop the 30 pounds and get that reward. You’ll be rewarded with much more than just a $800 guitar. The improved fitness, health, and energy will be a reward to both you and the Mrs! Enjoy!

Said to my wife, "look what this guy's wife promised, I dropped half that, how about a $500 guitar?" (value adjusted accoring to exchange rate) - didn't work.

Not a bad deal... I negotiated with my wife that if I let her/the kids adopt/rescue a kitten I would get a new Epiphone Casino. Everyone is better off...especially the spoiled cat.

    Good luck.

My suggestion is look at it this simple way. For weight loss or change to really work, be sustainable etc, it has to be manageable, something easy to stick with and be part of everyday life. It's also like learning to play the guitar - practice, stick with it, a lifestyle change.

Forget fad diets and just do the modest carbs, fats and fresh stuff we're all supposed to do. Make those snacks you love some fruit you like. Get movement in your life and turn that into some simple exercise.

It's been easy for me to keep weight off since 2007 by just doing simple replacing of less healthy stuff with an action or item that's good for you. Once I got used to that for a year plus it was even easy to do more athletic things than I'd done for a long time or in some cases forever. Replacing time at restaurants and bars with self-prepared food and my physical activity pals has been a more rich experience altogether. Looking back it was just like a fun version of learning guitar and other stuff. All those I know who didn't go with fads and kept at it have had it sustainable.

Taking the simple stuff to a next level - sports, activity - lets you add all those snacks back!

Again, good luck and have fun with it!

Haven't read this thread. I imagine there are some hot shot comments and revelations. And a small percent that get it. THe most potent drug you now take is SUGAR. You say you are overweight. You are probably pre-diabetic. The motivation should be your health. BTW, exercise works, but weight falls off you when you eat right. Learn about Carbs and where they are. THe guitar offer is great incentive, but when you get it, your weight will rise. If she got you another guitar after the first, you would loose weight cause of the guitar not your health and your weight will gain back again.

Sometimes looking into another man's habits in life, can make you thankful to be back in Kansas. During the course of my lifetime I've lost at least 68,000 lbs, and gained most of it back shortly after the diet was discarded from boredom.

When I went to the doctor the other day, my doc said something I have no idea whether he knew what he was talking about or not, but I'll just go ahead and put out what "he" said. In passing, he mentioned that if you drink one 16oz non diet soda a day for a year, at the end of the year it can equal a weight gain of 19 pounds. I can do nothing about as good as anybody, my wife might even say I excel at it, so I'm gonna do nothing when I crave a pop, and see what happens. I'm just not gonna drink 'em. We'll see what happens, life couldn't be that easy, but if stopping pop will make me lose weight, I think I can handle that, since it requires I do "nothing" witch I'm very good at.

I lost 25 pounds last year after reading a book called the Simple Diet. He doesn't sell anything other than the book. He's a nutritionist who's been studying weight loss for 40 years.

His theory is basically that you need to reduce calories, but counting calories and trying to prepare all your own food takes a lot of time and effort. So instead, just use the frozen meals like Lean Cuisine and buy prepackaged shakes. Also you can eat as much fruit and vegetables as you want. If you already have all the healthy stuff, it's much easier to stick with it.

I'd been trying to lose weight for years unsuccessfully but this worked really well. I made protein smoothies for breakfast, had a Lean Cuisine and a salad with fat free dressing for lunch, a protein shake or bar in the afternoon with maybe another piece of fruit, then a small homemade meal with veggies for a dinner, and one more protein smoothie before bed. I averaged about 1700 calories per day. I was hungry between meals and full after them.

My problem was alcohol. Drinking too much led to eating too much and I ended up losing 2 pounds during the week followed by gaining 3 pounds on the weekend. Now I'm about 8 pounds under where I started last year, going to give up the booze, and get back on the horse.
