Aside from the others mentioned (Police, Rush, etc), my two faves are The Jam and a newer band from Wales called The Joy Formidable.

Check them out... big Fender players and Ritzy can rip (easy on the eyes too).

another one for ZZtop, I'd also add SRV but I thought they were a four piece?

SRV and Double Trouble is a perfect example of the skills and techniques 3 piece bands must posses. If you've never seen "Live at the El Mocambo", have a look.

Check out Texas Flood from that performance. Prodigious guitar work, balsy vocals, chording bass, drummer riding the ride cymbal during the solo; it's all here. I've including a link to an El Mocambo playlist after the video.

Vintage Trouble are way good! Saw them open for the Who a few years back.

    1- Rush
    2- Winery Dogs
    3-Van Halen
    4- Kings X
    5- Stuck Mojo
Close between the Dogs and Rush as Winery Dogs are really rocking my world right now!

Also been a BIG Kings X fan for years

Some of the Stuck Mojo stuff is just to over top for me but there is just something SO appealing about a Libertarian leaning politically incorrect interracial Southern band giving a big middle finger to the Progressive elite left!

I've never been in a three piece but my favorite would have to be Gov't Mule back in the Allen Woody era.

Not to say they're my favourite 3-piece, but a couple of months ago, I was SLAYED by a 3 piece Anvil in a bar in Peterborough Ontario.
Was my first Anvil show, I'd seen the movie but didn't know what to expect. They KILLED! I'm not even a big metal guy. A band firing on all cylinders is a band firing on all cylinders.
Highly recommend catching them. Great band, great show.

I guess I'm not very imaginative - Hendrix, ZZ Top, The Who. But I generally prefer a second guitar and don't mind the odd keyboard or second drummer. Never really dug the whole three guitar thing - Skynard handled it as well as possible, but that third guitar is just taking up space usually...

If three instruments plus a non-instrument-playing singer counts, then I vote for FREE.

For just three-member bands, I've got to go with The Police.
