What? No love for Blink 182?
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Cream & ZZ Top
What he said!
But now that Rush has pretty much retired, I think I can say with some certainty that I saw the greatest three-piece on the planet last night:
The Adrian Belew Power Trio
Unbelievable. Jaw-dropping, just...
Just go see them!
Led Zep - 4th member a singer
Elvis - early days
I play in 3 piece now
I've played in a few and enjoyed them, but we never quite got to Wipers-level goodness.
Rush, not simply because of their musicianship - arguably one of the best drummer /bassist ever. But the incredible creativity they brought to rock in the 70's... Srv for sure, but they are gone
Band of Gypsies
Like the OP says, it's hard. Nowhere to hide in a guitar/bass/drums lineup, and harder still without a separate singer. I've found that the first thing to go tends to be my singing, which is mediocre anyway. So I have almost always played in a 4 or more lineup. But at last, at age 67, I'm playing in a local 3 piece band. I'm loving it because you really can't get away with daydreaming . Here's a link to a video of our 3 piece recorded a couple of weeks ago doing a cover of Clapton doing a cover of Lowell Fulson's Reconsider Baby.
John Mayer Trio / Police. Not exactly rock but close enough.
Ohhh wait, my favorite rock trio is definitely Raging Grace. ZZ Top sound with better words!
Ever play in a 3 piece? No
Do you play in one now? No
Who is your favorite? (And it can be the Who)
Ben Folds Five
Kevin Borich Express
Always had a soft spot for these.
Well I just saw Living Colour here in Sydney last night..mind blown!
I agree with those saying 3 piece plus singer is not a 3 piece. Not having one of the instrumentalists being the singer changes the dynamic.
Regardless, no, I haven't nor do I play in a 3 pice band, but I would love to! My favorite has to be Rush with Honorable Mention going to the original Gov't Mule.
A voice is not a "piece" in the band. An instrument is a "piece" in a band. Three pieces plus a singer is a three piece band in this thread.
The human voice IS an instrument, with all the intonation and expressiveness that is required of one.
But it's your list/thread, I guess.
