I'm playing a private party for 3 hours Christmas evening. Does that count? (Pays great)
Working today. Hoping to sneak off around 2:00
I'm a dispatcher with the railway company and we work on a fixed schedule of morning, late and night shifts, so there are no holidays for us. This year I'm here today (24th) till 9 at night and tomorrow I need to be back here at 6 am. So it's basically just drive home, go to bed and get up early.
I hope you all have a Merry Christmas though.
Paged at 10:30 last night about a server down but it was a network issue as the server's been up for over 1,200 days. Then because our response system is so borked, I got paged again at 11:30 by our NOC because the response system failed to process my acknowledgement (seems it doesn't understand HTML messages). Then paged again at 3:30am because a server rebooted.
And this is a good week.
I work xmas eve and day, 1pm-1am.
Doing tonight 6pm to 6am Xmas morning.
Last night shift at least so the drinking can commence as of tomorrow afternoon
I'm a firefighter here in Sydney. .it's 9am on the 25th as i write this, working from 7am to 5pm or so. .no calls so far. .hippie it stays that way!
Merry Xmas people!
I'll be working Christmas Day this year : /
In my last job in America (law enforcement) I worked every Christmas. Being single, and having no kids, I worked holidays so those with families could take the day off. Christmas was always busy, and my first arrest as a rookie officer was on a Christmas day. It started as domestic disturbance call about someone vandalizing a car. It turned out to be a skinny 20-something drunk woman kicking dents into her boyfriend's car, barefooted. She put up a fight while being arrested, and it took three of us to get her cuffed and into the back of a unit. She then managed to break a new pair of Peerless handcuffs, and then kicked out the back window to escape. Catching and cuffing her again was much harder the second time, she scratched my partner, bit my sergeant on the knee, and screamed bloody murder the whole time. We had to put three sets of cuffs on her, wrists, ankles, and then hands to ankles. Once booked into her holding cell she plugged up the toilet and flooded her cell and the floor in the hallway. She was cuffed again by her ankles and wrists, and put on the floor in the water, until she got evaluated for a psychiatric hold.
Something about the holidays seems to bring out the worst in some people, and the holiday season is non-stop busy.
The hotel I work in is closed on Christmas day, but it's business as usual on Christmas Eve. Not that it really matters to me, as my weekend is Monday and Tuesday, but my position as a maintenance technician is more akin to a housekeeper on steroids, so I'm required to be available any time the hotel is opened and operating.
I was scheduled to work, third year in a row, but managed to get someone to swap with me for the 22nd.
I may get called in.
Sounds familiar!!! Drunk women were always worse than men!!! When I pushed a squad car around, by the time the evening of the 25th the domestic calls steadily increased. Couples that spend 36-48 hours together that normally won't or don't and start drinking booze creates a different holiday atmosphere. Unfortunately the kids were there also.
I haven't worked holidays for several years but have many more years working during them than not from being on call to locked down in a room with 3 others looking out on snow covered corn fields making sure no one screws with 12 nuclear missiles.
It sucked working jobs that required my attention be directed away from my family on the holidays.
I'm starting to do my Christmas drinking early, just in case.
I'm off but my gal is working. That sucks because we're a new enough couple that we still enjoy being around each other. lol
Oh, she's a cook at a nursing home and those old folks seem to think they need fed everyday!
I'll probably be there soon enough myself.
I have to work every other. This year i'll be home which is nice. I work at a hospital.
Hospital here too, on call, probably slow. Makes me appreciate my Buddhist ex-co-worker.
Former CSI-type, for a good-size suburban county, holidays needed coverage, and you'd pray nothing came in near the end of your shift. Holiday suicides, which are a thing, were the worst. I did that gig in the late '70's and some of them still haunt me.
Long holidays and spouses getting fed up with each other and drunk, fighting, hurting, and sometimes killing each other, is also a thing. Sometimes got a bit depressing, but they were usually settled down by the time I got back from the scene to fingerprint them and escort them to jail. Sad that more than once, I heard something like "better here than home with that --itch / --astard". Jeesh.
Fortunately for me now, nobody wants to talk insurance safety requirements on the holidays, so I get to spend it with the my family. With whom I somehow manage to avoid fighting ..
Im off for two weeks sorry.
Except Ill be working hard at catching some fish if the ice is thick enough sorry again.
How many folks who posted in this thread when it started three years ago are still in the same job?
