Fire is the only solution. Time for a radical relic job. And the cat? I think you need to remind it that instrument stings used to be made out of cat gut.

I don't want to derail this fine, fine thread, but I have to respond. Bacteria only becomes airborne when droplets of spray are created. Bacteria does not float in the air after a cat pees on your guitar. Viruses and bacteria are made to go airborne when, say, someone sneezes or coughs. This expels countless microscopic globes (globules?) of saliva and phlegm into the air which - given specific conditions - can have a fair area of effect. The same can be true when a cay sprays urine on a guitar. However, after that urine is set into the wood of the guitar, there is very little chance that bacteria will float up from the surface of the sprayed area. What you would be smelling would be the various components of the urine (some of which is lighter than air) and / or byproducts of bacterial metabolic processes. But your average bacterium doesn't "float and fart" fumes without some sort of mechanical initiator.

The same is true of, say, someone with body odor.

Now, many strains of bacteria are completely viable in an airborne state - one of which produces tuberculosis. Most, however, have to be spread through manual contact.

This all said, I'm sure the proper application of LASERS would make this problem go away right quick.

I took my new Les Paul to my sister's to show it off. I left the case open in the hallway; you can guess the rest. It stunk for about a year. I repeatedly sprayed it down with febreeze, threw in a half box of baking soda, close the case, shake vigorously, leave it closed for 24 hours, leave it open for 24 more hours, vacuum vigorously. I'll bet I did this a dozen times. Couple years later, zero smell. Frikkin' cats.

    Go away cat smell!!!!

Maybe write lyrics to the tune of heartbreaker:

In the days of my youth my cat peed on my guitar
Now I have to clean it before i can put it in my car.....
Now its reached that state that it smells like the can
No matter how I try I failed at every plan....

Go away you cat pee smell....

Some threads just have a life of there own;)

Yes, spread by manual contact......do you not use your hand on the neck? Does your hand not have a layer of bacteria? Does bacteria not act on urine to break down urea?

All of those answers would be YES. This is not an argument, this was trying to help a member solve his issue with a guitar contaminated by cat urine. I tried to help, you are trying to pick a fight....big difference.

My issue was the "bacteria in the air" comment.

Not trying to start a fight, but clarifying facts.

I think we can both agree that touching car pee is bad, and that lasers can solve every problem known to Man.

It was late night for me as well and I just left Facebook....some of the irritation bled over into this thread. Actually, a laser would do the trick pretty well as do dry-ice blasting....two opposite spectrums with the same result.

No, no Nosmo. Fake cats are what they throw up in the air at the skeet range. Or are those pigeons? Actually, either will work.

    Poor cat. :(
It's not like it asked to be in the benz to start with. :(

I say that.... my grand parents used to flush the kittens their cats would have. They wouldn't pay to have her spayed, and thought flushing them away was quite alright.... :(

You can remove the smell using the same method used to tan leather, but this requires removing the brain of the cat.

Usually it's sufficient to remove the cat's testicles.
