I'd love your thoughts on this.

A while ago I almost went for a squier Custom II tele. I wish I had done as they're now discontinued. By all account the neck on that was awesome!

Also owned a CV tele (50's) which was nice but, I dunno, the action was terrible and I couldn't improve it even with all the normal truss rod tweaks etc.

Any cheap hidden gems to be found in the range ?

I think the problem you'll find is consistency. If you want a good cheap Tele, you're going to have to play alot of them to find the one that works for you.

Baja for me. I like a bigger neck than the standard models. YMMV.

The Baja was a contender, right up until they almost doubled its price !!!

Used MIM Standard would be my vote, but I don't know what the market price is in your area. Around here, you can get them at $300 or less with some patience. It's a buyer's market.

They've gotten more expensive here, which puts them perilously close to the Specials. For me I'd much rather the USA special.

    Ibanez talman!

For truly Tele shaped guitars I'd look at a MIM standard

Sounds like you got unlucky there or you don't know how to set up a guitar, the classic vibe series is considered to be very good. But that's another set of models that's had their price jacked up.

Try as many Squier Standard as you can get your hands on. There may be a gem in there + you get extra coin for spending on a new pedal.
    Second hand Classic Vibe Custom.
Vintage brand. Try to try before you buy.
Squier Vintage Modified Custom. It'll be a second hand in that price range.
Shop around, you may drop on a second hand MIM.

One man's decent is another man's garbage. I played a Squire Affinity in a shop the other day - those sell for $200 US - not sure what the exchange rate is but that's pretty damn inexpensive. They're reputed to have really cheap jacks and switches and I'm not sure about the pickups, but the guitar played great. I never plugged it in, but it felt really good and the neck was pretty damn nice. Not Baja nice or Clapton Strat nice, but really quite decent. I'd be happy to have one. I'd probably eventually replace some of the hardware, but how a guitar plays is the thing that hard to do much about (unless it needs a basic setup, but this was already set up pretty well). I'm not looking for a guitar, but if I was and I was on a limited budget, I'd take a look at one of those and just figure on slowly upgrading some of the hardware as needed. Or spend more upfront and get a classic vibe and probably not need to do much to it...

The MIM gets my vote too...they're great guitars for the price...I'd have no problems or issues buying one myself....and would not hesitate.

Nah the fault was definitely with the guitar, be it uneven frets are whatever, no matter what I tried (on a brand new guitar, I just couldn't get the CV's action low enough to become a non-issue.

    Lovely guitar otherwise.

I've give that Talman a look...interesting guitar, but the top end models are just too expensive IMO. The MIM standard, or maybe a MIM Blacktop with a few mods might be a good option.

I'm partial to Tele Customs so I'd say a Squier Tele Custom.
