That is it, plus one more thing: He wants to draw attention on the music more than on the person who performs it. If you think about it, the mask and bucket thing wears off kinda quick and what remains at the end of the day is the music.

Buckethead is doing his own thing and that’s something quite rare nowadays with all the mass-produced “stars” and "idols" without any soul or talent whatsoever. Unfortunately, people are not used to actual artists actually doing their own thing anymore.

He likes to escape into music and a fantasy world to get along with reality and that’s what he wants to make possible for his audience as well – an escape, a ride. Much like his major influence Michael Jackson, he is passionate, professional and a weirdo like any genius is. I remember him saying something like he’d rather have his music meaning a lot to some people than just something to a lot of people. And to me that just makes good sense.

The mask does not cover something shocking or ugly. He is no other musician in disguise and his face is not full of scars or anything. He is a normal and quite handsome looking guy, educated and intelligent. Aside from his rather shy persona, I do believe he was the only one in Guns N’ Roses to ever be actually “up there” with Axl Rose on both the musicial and the intellectual level. They are actually keeping his parts on the “Chinese Democracy” record because most of the songwriting was done by Axl and Buckethead – and no one else can play his guitar parts.

He also auditioned for Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ozzy Osbourne before eventually joining Guns N’ Roses. Axl actually invited Buckethead but he refused until Axl presented to him a hard to find Leatherface doll that Buckethead wanted to have for his collection of horror-memorabilia.

He took the band to another level, just listen to his rendition of the “Nightrain” solo or the solo in “There Was A Time”. Maybe he was what the band needed, but the band was not what he needed, calling him a porn addict who only wanted to score a major record deal for his own music and playing power games about who should play what solo. On the other hand, insisting on his befriended session drummer joining the band and recording his guitar parts in an actual chicken coop that had to be build inside the studio sure didn’t help much either.

If it wasn’t for the (alter-)egos, the Axl/Buckethead collaboration could have really made a difference for rock music. You may not like the freaks, but they sure make some great music.

Check out “Nottingham Lace” which I think is his one of his finest solo pieces. I can also recommend his 1998 album “Colma”, which is probably his most personal work, showcasing the softer (human) side of Buckethead.

LOL! I thought I was the only one to ever see that show!

BTW Bucket head in not Slash, they actually played a show together once upon a time.

He was however, in GnR back in the day.

Theres a pretty funny article with him about Axle Rose's infamous Chinese Democracy album in the new GuitarWorld rag

That’s the internet. You provide actual information on topic and it doesn’t take long before someone comes up with a cynical one-liner, trying to be funny at your expense and makíng you look like an idiot so the information you took the effort to provide gets discredited, overlooked and eventually lost.

For some reason it has become impossible to mention Axl Rose in any context whatsoever without someone making an ironic comment. It's sort of a reflex I can understand, but it’s annoying regardless. Axl is to Guns N’ Roses what Roger Waters is to Pink Floyd. The general public might not like his personality, but the man is undeniably a musicial and intellectual genius and everyone who had the pleasure or pain to deal with him will confirm that. And that applies to Buckethead as well, but not for anyone else in this sorry excuse of a band, which is the whole point I was trying to get across with the one line that you picked on just so you could get rid of yet another stupid Axl joke.

whitele... it's cool... settle down.. I'm sure Mr. Rose has quite the intellect...

but.. just because he's a frontman of a rock and roll group, a genius that does not make.

i've seen that term thrown around quite a bit when it comes to popular icons... I'm not so liberal with the term....

especially when it comes to modern day musicians....

Buckethead is an unbelievable musician. The reason for the bucket and mask appears to be a result of his shyness, and I have a conceivable explanation for this behavior.

Buckethead appears, in most photos, to have very large hands and be very tall and slender. This could be attributed to something called Marfans Syndrome, which causes abnormally long limbs and and elongated spinal column. It has serious complications on the heart, causing undue fatigue, shortness of breath, and pain in the chest.

The reason he could be so shy is because of this disease, and the aesthetic effects it has on him. Perhaps that is why he hides behind a mask, because of shame.

Then again this is completely theoretical.

P.S. Buckethead is a friggin legend.

to sum this up, everyone wants to know who buckethead is. but think. would it be as cool if he was found out. hed just fall off the face of the earth like other shredders. or he'll stay with GNR. i think he just wants his privacy. maybe he is a legend who faked his death. from what i understand, he is young though, so unlikely it would be. cant be slash. slashs hand are too small, and he needs another half foot. either way, finding out who he is would ruin our fun. one day, he'll vanish. then people will always wonder, adn he'll be one of the best. i think thats gonna happen.
