Just came across a Craigslist ad, which ended with "I'm hip so I do accept PayPal and Venmo as well as cash for payment options."

Is that what it takes hip these days?

    =O.

I hear the term often as 'hey man, hip me to the whole energy drink thing' being hip got co opted to mean 'cool' when all it really means is 'filled in' as in 'fill me in on how ssl certs work'.... then, after instruction 'i'm hip to the whole ssl certification thang'

So, the guy is just saying that he is filled in on modern payment... I think even the hipster thing is about being 'in on the joke' or being 'aware of the scene' vs. being cool.

of course, if you are in on the joke, you are probably cool, but it is not a guarantee.

Around most guitar forums hip means hip replacement.

I’m still trying to deal with my overwhelming hepness so I haven’t gotten to “hip” yet.

I think this cuts to the core of the whole "hipster" thing. "Cool" is in on it in terms of being aware of it, but also participates in it. "Cool" commits to something and takes it on as it's own.

"Hipster" is in on it like a joke, but does not participate. It does not commit to anything or take ownership of anything. Even when it appears to, it's less about doing a thing and more about referring (perhaps ironically) to a thing.

Cool: "Check out this (clothes, music, etc.)!"
Hipster: "Heh, check out this (clothes, music etc.)."

"Hipster" is for people who want to be in on everything but not take responsibility for any of it.

I used to be hip - now I'm mostly trying not to break one.

Yup! Age spoiler alert: I still talk like that!

But he's not using it in that sense, so it begs the question of what is hip. Or more exactly, what has hip become?
