I’ve only started playing within the past year but I’m dedicating a lot of time to it since I’ve retired and I can, now. Without spending a ton of money, I’ve been collecting a variety of guitars because I want to have a variety of makers, woods, shapes and pickup configurations. I love playing all of them, making all the different sounds I can. Plus, they’re dam fun to just stare at. Someday I’ll settle into a favorite, I guess, and maybe concentrate on getting a classic version of it but for now I’m digging the variety.
I’ve got my JB in the Jackson and a Dimarzio distortion in the Ibanez, two pickups that I’ve heard many times are crucial to any rock guitar collection. I’ve got my Baja tele, my LP, my V. The cheap Yamaha is similar to an hss strat, and really is a pretty quality guitar regardless of it’s price.
When I can next afford a guitar, what should I get? A real Stratocaster? Something with P90s? Something with an hsh configuration? This noob would be interested in your input, even though it’s sort of a personal preference question. Here’s what I have:

Go and play some strats! They're my favorite. When I started I thought fenders and strats were overrated (dumb high school me) until I owned one, and then I bought my first strat. Now I have something like 4 or 5. But give it a try and see what you like.

Gretsch or something in that branch of the evolutionary tree. Or a 335/Casino.

I actually have a 35 year old Mountain acoustic, which is what I picked up to play after I retired and then thought, hey, get an electric. Have you heard of Mountain? Many moons ago, they were putting out, in Japan, knockoffs of the super expensive Martins. I’ve searched the internet and it’s hard to even find mention of them but when you do you see people comparing them favorably with the Martins that were three times the price.

An electric 12-string (there’s a nice MIJ Stratocaster XII out just now), or a Baritone.

I know that you say you want the Charvel Pro to give you the orange, but an orange Gretsch with filtertrons will not only give you the colour you need to fill that slot in the rainbow, but a change from all those HH loaded guitars you already have.

    You need a P-90 guitar.

Then again you are short on telecasters, this was before I bought a BSB 50's Baja, not a large collection by TDPRI standards.

50's Baja for sure, if you are okay with slightly fatter necks. Judging by the color of your whiskers, a birth year guitar would be a great addition. ;)

Dude, I’m 55. Not sure how old the whiskers are but they’re definitely vintage.;)

I figured you were roughly that vintage... and a mighty fine one it is! An inexpensive arch top would fill that position nicely. I did that, except I paid too damn much for mine. However, it's a beautiful guitar. I still gig regularly, have used it on one gig so far, and will be using it on a big band gig in a week and a half, so I'm cool with it. Anyway, a birth year guitar is my suggestion.

I'd recommend a Gretsch, the MIJ models with TV Jones pickups sound great, IMO.
