Recent thread "join a band" got me thinking as to what I could start working on so that I would be better prepared to jam with some people, or a band.

They refer to "the standards" for the genre that Sinatra and them sang right?

Are there "standards" for classic rock and blues? I mean like the must know staples?

Would love to hear what others think on this. Let's hear your 5 or 10 songs you would recommend as essentials.

    Thanks in advance!

There are indeed standards. From my time in the trenches (90s):

    Brown-Eyed Girl
    Sweet Home Alabama
    Mony Mony
    Honky Tonk Woman
    Mustang Sally
    All Right Now

There are plenty more, but I was only able to get the "big ones" posted before the involuntary twitching started.

As I see it, any song that has endured through several generations and is being covered by many musicians could be considered a "standard"..
Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee, Elvis, Ricky Nelson..Etc..

A LOT of good suggestions above...I might add....
    Satisfaction
    Paint It Black
    Cinnamon Girl
    Pretty Woman
    Twist and Shout
    Suzy Q
    Rollin' on the River
    That'll Be the Day
    Don't you Forget About Me
    To Love Somebody
Once played a private party....audience was less than enthusiastic, we were playing Robben Ford, SRV, U2, they weren't responding....so I had to pull out the WMD..."You Really Got Me" by Kinks. That got the energy going and the rest of the night was FUN....

What about songs that sound like they should be standards?

This one should be a standard, but for some reason isn't. Alvin Lee kills the solo.
