A familiar song came on the radio today.

Darius Rucker's version of Wagon Wheel, ludicrously popular a few years back, is one decent song (by the opinion of many) that fell victim of radio overplay.

Many consider it to be part of the few acceptable modern country songs; it is also a fairly popular campfire song. So, love it or hate it? Opinions?

I liked the original version by Old Crow Medicine Show the first 100 or so times I heard it, but it's now on my list of songs I hope I never have to hear again.

I disliked it when it first came out. I used to see the Old Crow bunch at the local bar for no cover, and see some of them at festivals jamming. It wasn't anything like their other music at the time. But, its gone viral now, folks react to in on the dance floor, so eh, its not a bad tune in context. Glad the OCMS have done well.

Gets a good reception at gigs.

Here's a backing track for anyone that wants to experiment...

I don't listen to the radio very much due to the fact that I'm not in range of many stations, so I was not exposed to the song until a short time ago. Great tune, but like everything else, overplay would wear it out.

I have seen this song discussed elsewhere, this is the first time I can remember hearing it. it sounds ok, but i'm not going to run out and buy it. why is this song so controversial?

edited to add: i'd like to have his guitar and those old chevy pick up trucks.

We play it once a year On Sunday morning after we play a festival the night before . In August . Like an acoustic Bloody Mary morning.

As long as that’s as much as I hear it - fine.

Oh - and it is corny as all hell. Some songs are . I just dont hate it.

Would never be a “Wooooo !” song for me . ( a band starts playing a song in concert you love and you go “Wooo !” ?)

Not at all. But I could see earthy-crunchy tie-dye types Wooing it up for it .

the chorus Dylan wrote in 73. I like the chorus. I don't like the verses very much and don't like playing them as they feel out of time to me... singing it is not fun either....

I don't hate it for the cult of personality reasons, the chorus is infectious, but it is kind of a mess other wise.

My immediate reaction was "Yeah, that's a good song. I like hearing it on the radio." Then I turned on the radio to my "favorite, local station". (Progressive Album Rock") I kept it on for about 10 minutes. Know what? That's a GREAT song compared to what is usually on. Bring it on.

Oh, and BTW I'm fairly sure the same thing would have happened if I'd tuned into the 'Country" station.

IMO, the problem is commercial, and now satellite radio. If something is played enough it can grow on us, and if we come to like it enough, buy it so we can listen to it over and over again. Over and over again, whether on the radio or from a download gets tiring. No song survives it’s own success. That’s why the #1 spot isn’t forever. I’ve abandoned radio. I put my own playlists together from YouTube and believe it or not, Music to your Ears here. I don’t play anything to death and every day sounds fresh with 60+ playlists to choose from plus concerts. Wagon Wheel is one of thousands of tunes on my USB stick. I probably haven’t heard it yet this year and I’ve certainly not tired if it yet. Good song, yes. Great? I’m not sure of that.

Not my "style" but fun to play; I played it while sitting in with a country band. A crowd-pleaser; which what it's all about I guess when you'r gigging - heck I played "House of the Rising Sun".

I like it and it is fun and easy to play. Thus why it’s a campfire song or that hungover still asleep in the morning song.

I have to admit I either never heard this song or it never registered one bit!

Couldn't get through the Old Crow Med Show version... not bad just as boring as it gets to me and I'm an acoustic old timey music junkie!.... I thought anyways...

This song was already worn out long before Rucker recorded his cover.
