I saw this on another forum website, and it may have been posted here before, but I couldn't find it.

What is an unpopular opinion you hold related to guitar, that most people would say is crazy? I'm hoping this thread isn't a place to tell people their opinions suck. Here's a few of mine.

    1) Gibson les pauls suck. The headstock design is poor and they are too heavy. I could maybe ride with a Jr however.
    2) I don't think there is a huge difference between Mexican and American Fenders.
    3) I only want an American Fender, I wouldn't wear a Mexican Fender with pride, But i take pride in saying my Fender is made in the USA. (see example 2, I'm a hypocrite.)
    4) I don't think Jimi Hendrix is a good guitar player.

Let's here some of your opinions that may ruffle some feathers! Remember to be respectful.

I disagree with just about everything you posted. Is that respectful enough?

I don't see anything there worth arguing about.

I've got one opinion that seems to be unpopular. It's my opinion that people should give their guitars to me for free. Haven't found even one person that shares this opinion...

Yeah that was good. haha. That's the point, people usually don't share these opinions. It's definitely not universal.

    .

Wood doesn't matter, even on acoustics. There I said it.

The 3mm thick top on that fancy acoustic offers very little resistance to the 125lbs of string load, it's the depth of the cross-beam bracing holding them and every builder 'tap tones' the top and carves away the bracing until the spring rate is acceptable to them/their recipe. That's why carbon fiber, bamboo, and other materials can function.

The actual engineering beam geometric strength changes in the ratio of Base * (Depth^3); so the depth of the beam is a cubic increase in strength. Seems like they should be listing the bracing wood material on their spec sheet.

    My unpopular opinions:

    1. Rolling Stones are a band of mediocre musicians that wrote some good songs 50 years ago, and have been living off that legacy for the past 40 years. None of the hits they've had since Some Girls have been worthy of radio play.

    2. Relic'ing is another word for ruining a perfectly good instrument.

    3. Paul Simon has always sucked without Art Garfunkel, who was the vocal talent of the duo.

    4. John Mayer sounds like he's straining to take a dump when he sings.

Vintage pickups sound better since the electrons in the coils' metal have aligned over time to the magnetic field.

There is no difference between nitrocellulose and polyurethane finishes in tone. Poly lasts longer and doesn't show wear which IMO is a good thing.

    Worn guitars look terrible.

Relics and Road Worn models almost always feel and play better than the equivalent non-distressed models.

There is enough room on my tele control plate for 2 vol and 2 tone pots.

    1. There are a lot of blowhards around here who wouldn't know talent if it bit them on the arse.

I'd rather have fewer, better guitars.

    Sustain is overrated.

Wood is integral to tone, but species don't matter in an electric guitar.

Nitro is better, but doesn't sound different.

Handwired amps are better, but don't sound different.

Any blue or green or guitar looks like K-Mart vomit.

Good playing sparkles, so guitars should not.

Fuzz boxes/tones ruin otherwise passably good tones. If I want to hear wet cardboard attacking a dead dog I'll look in my basement again.

A guitarist who doesn't think that drum tones are as important as guitar tones doesn't understand music.

Shredding and heavy metal: Overdrive and distortion are too important a musical tool and palette to be toyed with to such artless extremes. Hot Sauce Matters.

Ovation guitars: Should have all been used to blow up Three Rivers Stadium, Riverfront Stadium, and other fake-turf/concrete bowl sins against the human spirit.

Gibson acoustics can sound awful muddy in their bass and mid-range registers (but nicely sweet in their upper registers), and it boggles me how people can't hear that almost all Martins are so much crisper, all around.

Bigsbys are cool and expressive, even on Teles.

    SG's are really, really ugly.

Jazzmasters are even uglier than SG's--wheels on a guitar??--but so, so expressive (partly 'cause of those damn wheels).

I kind of like those curly/coily guitar cords popular in the '70s, but since the '70s were damnable, I can't admit that to myself.

Chet Atkins looks so serene that he bores me so badly that I can't form any opinion about his playing.

I like those over-ambered/clumsily-vintage-toned necks on even cheap guitars.

I think that using thumb and slipped-on finger picks is kind of cheating (but I'd like to get good at it).

    1. string brand doesn't matter
    2. A whole lot of folks who go on and on about intonation are tone deaf
    3. there should be a category of music where you can not use any pedals at all
    that's a start

The typical crunch sound associated with humbuckers sounds horrible.
