Ugly cars you find oddly appealing

I'm wildly guessing, it is sitting too high in the front to have the V-8 in it (although their six was no lightweight!)

I LOVE them! I agree that the rear spoiler is a little strange wheels look like rotary phone dials (remember them) and the front end looks dated now, but I had a buddy in high school whose parents had one.

He called it an "EX RAH TA" (XR4Ti script looked like it would be said that way).

That thing was FAST!!!! Any car that fast, with the handling to go with it gets a pass in my book!

Also, on the Ford Fairmont, folks had a Mercury Zephyr station wagon when I was in high school. Bought used it was strangely equipped, 200 CID I6, cruise control, AM radio, vinyl bench seats and a strange butternut squash yellow/beige. No AC, or power anything, why anyone would order cruise control and nothing else.

And it had a little pep. I remember taking on a buddy's '77 Monte Carlo 305 V8 (with 5 people in it, against only me). Got a good jump off the line, and he was there but not gaining.

My understanding is that GM licensed a design to them. If GM had decided to develop it further it could have been a good engine.

But the Stag had cooling issues, and with the aluminum engine it would blow head gaskets sitting too long in traffic.

Different engine. The Brits did have the 3.5 liter Buick aluminum V8, but the Stag didn't use that engine. Instead, it had a bespoke OHC V8 derived from the Triumph Dolomite 4-cylinder engine. I don't think that engine was ever used in another car.

Yeah, that little Buick V-8 was a great one and GM was dumb not to make more use of it, themselves.

At 3.5 liters, it was perfect for a wide variety of uses in UK vehicles and was one of the better powerplants you could get on UK cars for some time.

Wife's favorite car when we first got married. Saw one on CL the other day for a grand and told her I was going to buy her dream car. She got excited as she has been talking about Jaguars. Showed her the caddy and she shook her head and said no way. Told me that was her dream car in the 80s when they were nice. Now not so nice!!
BTW she saw a Bentley the other day and is leaning more that way than a Jag. I told her to keep dreaming

    Very much a Volvo guy here.......I have a 61 544 , a 245 , a couple of 940s , and my sons also have Volvos
I cant get into the front wheel drive cars , so 98 is kind of the cutoff year for me
The old b18 and b20 engine internals were made at Bofors in many cases , cannon barrel material , LOL
The hardening of the crankshafts extended 5/6 mm into the material , really impressive.
When the first ohc motors , b21, were developed in the early 70's , the design goal was to make an engine capable of withstanding about 500hp from a 2.1 litre engine , and they can
They are simply some of the best built cars ever , and it finally took Ford to run down Volvo , and GM to close SAAB down completely....very sad !
I love many classic cars , even some of the more quirky British stuff
Because I was forced to work on them back in the 70's I cant have any warm feelings for any of the French cars debated here , sorry
Many of the owners loved these cars dearly , but having to work on them will make me hate them forever

People want to be popular, and so they choose certain unusual/limited availability vehicles as "ugly" so as to offend the fewest people.

If you told people that a Chevy Silverado was ugly, the amount of scorn that would rain down on you would be momentous - so you choose the rarest vehicle you can think of.

I think it just so happens that some of the most common vehicles, are in fact the ugliest. People bought it because the family fit in it and the payments could be made on time - the appearance was of no moment.

The Pacer is appealing, and if tons had been manufactured and sold, it would be called "cute". But AMC was a small company and people assumed buyers of AMC products would accept abuse and disrespect.

I like the AMC Hornet and Concord, and I dislike the AMC Gremlin for its bad handling and dumb packaging and the appearance doesn't matter because I already wouldn't have one.

Look at this Nissan Murano Cross Cabriolet. $ 42,000 and ugly as sin.

Ugly is a lot about lack of function. This vehicle was an All Wheel drive, open top vehicle. Which I guess you would use to explore mountainous or somewhat inaccessible areas. And that would mean dirt and gravel roads? But if you leave the top down, won't the dust ruin your day? Even if the top IS up and the windows closed, the structure is so loosey-goosey that the dust infiltrates all the door and window and top seals. This is ugly by any and all metrics.

I've got no problem with the Silverado. There were three black ones parked in a row at my son's football practice last Thursday.

The current Corvette is hideous. Absolutely HIDEOUS.

Always like the AMC Pacer, even before Wayne's World. I drove one and the view of the outside was spectacular in it; like driving around in a bubble.

Hey, I've always wanted one of those -- the Bug-Eyed Sprite -- but certainly NOT is the color green!

Can't believe nobody has done the much-maligned Chevy El Camino...

My first car was this style, but blue (early 70's)...

Later on, had one of the early 80's similar to this...

Definitely not chick magnets, but with a high-output 350 cu. in. engine...these things would scream.

Jay Leno's done some interesting segments on AMCs

The backstory on the Playmate of the Year AMX is interesting/tragic. The girl who was gifted the car by Playboy was Victoria Vetri, who played the girl who jumps from the roof in "Rosemary's Baby." In 2011, she was sentenced to nine years in prison for attempting to kill her husband.

Leno also did a segment on the Jensen Interceptor.

I thought the Pacers looked like space vehicles.

My stepfather loves his El Caminos. When his mother died, he used part of his inheritance to trick out an El Camino with a T-top and a fancy paint job.
