I've just been putting together a tele using various bits and pieces and all has gone really well apart from getting the tone control to work. The p u's are high output Seymours (quarter pounder / hot tele 2 ) would I be better off using a 500k pot......i'm using 0.22 cap , and the pot is a 250 linear as opposed to an alpha one. As I say at present it doesn't do anything.

If nothing happens when you turn it all the way down, you probably have something wired up wrong.

    yup.
    Caps won't change a non-working pot.

Is the cap really 0.22? I think it's too high for tone control. The standard is 0.047 (47nF), personally I prefer 0.033.
