If Fender is going to issue a Chris Stapleton amp, I think a Petty Tele is long overdue.

Before we think I'm slamming Chris, I'm not! Sometimes I just question Fender's motives of signature models. Not Chris' ability as an artist.

Tom Petty has just had a way longer and more influential track record.

I wonder if Tom or his family have ever been approached?

Not being a huge fan of his I didn't even know he played guitar until about 10 years ago. Yup.

I am not sure I understand signature models, really. I mean, I get the marketing angle, but so many of the people they choose don't strike me as folks that will sell more guitars.

According to his daughters, he loved playing and recording with this Esquire...

At the risk of being accused of blasphemy Tom played so many different guitars it's hard to figure which one should be his signature. I think of Tom playing Ric's as much as Tele's but he's already got his own Rickenbacker Signature. He also played Strats regularly, particularly the last 10 years or so.

I think the Esquire that csapo suggested above makes sense too.

There was a Fender Custom Shop Tom Petty Signature Kingman Acoustic.

There was also the signature Rickenbacker.

And there was a Signature Martin.

It's time for a Signature Telecaster.

The funny thing about his Rickenbacker Signature, same one as on the Damn the Torpedo album, was that it was actually owned by Mike Campbell.

I agree wiht the idea but he is not associated with one tele but a bunch- any one chosen would seem kind of insincere...its not like SRV or Clapton who are much more closely associated with one guitar plus he can't offer any input

Honestly I don't think Tom was a huge fan of the signature stuff. As stated, he played so many guitars... He loved making the right sounds, you know? He'd probably be more keen on having a Tom Petty signature philosophy than a specific thing like ONE specific guitar. If that makes sense.

I know a lot of people will disagree but these days everyone and their brother has a signature model from so many companies.

I remember when the Yngvie, Clapton, Burton and Beck guitars came out and it was a big deal. I understand why Chet Atkins and Les Paul have signature models as well as people like Johnny Smith, Sal Salvador, etc....

These days most of them are just imported junk that don't really reflect what the artist really played. I'm pretty sure if someone were to do the research they could find out what years TP favored and find one of those.

I didn't follow his career more than casually but I never saw him with a lot of new FMIC garbage.

Sorry, but I don't see why, signature models just drive up price for no good reason.
