Thought a Twin was Supposed to be the Loudest Clean?

I was standing right between Whitey Morgan's Twin and Joey Spina's Egnater head (Mojotone cab?) last night and the Egnater was louder by far. Spina is a real nice player and might've been cranked by design, but it was an ear opener.

Hadn't paid much attention to the Egnater amps before last night, but I have a new respect.

I think Egnator make an 80 (88?) watt head.

Both amps have volume knobs on them, so they can produce a wide range of decibel levels. ;)

It's not always about "loudest" it's about mids in the mix.

I've read about issues of reliability on the Egnaters.

I've got an Egnater Tweaker 40 and I love it. I think it's really a Tweed at heart, although some people think it's a Blackface. It does both sounds really well, and a pretty decent 60s era Marshall too. I don't use it for the high gain or Vox sounds, although some people seem to like those too.

The first runs had some problems, but it seems like they cleaned them up in later models. I've had no trouble with mine EXCEPT for the foot switch. So I bought a new switch.

I'll bet my 1973 Acoustic 274 amp would be louder and cleaner than any of them. Sounded horrible, but it was clean and loud for sure.

Twins are loud. Were they set simlarly? Besides, there's something about a Twin.
I think the Mesa Lonestar 100w clean channel is pretty freakin loud too!

That's ridiculous. The loudest amps I ever played were Ampeg VT, V4 and HiWatt DR100s.

Blister paint off the walls while staying clean as a whistle. Sine wave in, sine wave out.

    Twins, eh!

Egnaters are decent, well-designed amps. The earlier ones had some reliability issues, but the current amps are pretty killer.

Egnaters are great amps. At least the one I have is. Im fond of the clean and the drive channel. They aren't Fender cleans but they aren't supposed to be. I've got a Fender for that. They are really good in there own right though. The OD just rocks. I don't see my Renegade going anywhere anytime soon. The blendable power tubes work great. Really lets you hear the difference in them. They had some bad ones get out early and there rep took a hit but most all are fine now. The problems they had tended to show up pretty quickly so you would probably know already got one.

Only if you have 3 speaker cabinets. 135 watts per output jack.

    Yup.

Spina's board contained a long rectangular pedal that said Renegade, so I assume that was the foot switch for his head. He did engage it for boost, but it was still very clean.

I didn't check the Twin's volume knob, so it may not have been a fair comparison. The Egnater was, however, very loud and very clean with an excellent tone.

Not necessarily 3 cabs. Just 3 loads. CoolBlueGlow made this cab with a dual voice coil woofer for frequencies below 160 hz, and two JBL D110's up top for above that. That cab weighs 65 pounds and is smaller than a marshall slant cab.

Originally it had 3 1x18's. Hahaha.
