I've had this conversation with my teacher a few times at guitar lessons. Other things you can say about Neil Young IMO include:

"He only plays as much as needed"
"He knows how much is needed to get the message across in a simple way."

He's also an absolute master at creating emotion with sound. The control he displays over feedback and distortion to create a mood, or emotional or even visceral reaction, is amazing.

Good thing she didn't get her looks from her dad.

    Would never associate the two.
Dern almost always played the nastiest characters.

I knew a crew guy who was a giant Neil fan and once saw him backstage at an all-day festival. He was super nervous to even talk to him, but Neil was with his dog, so he figured he'd go over and pet the dog as an opening to saying hi to Neil. He goes over "Heyyy, who's a good dog? hey boy" and starts petting the dog and Neil says "Hey man, don't touch my fu*&%in' dog, OK?" Destroyed him. The way he told it was really funny because he just LOVED Neil so much.

I love Neil's guitar playing a lot, but I'm leaving him the hell alone if I ever run into him.

Neil's voice is unique, despite the Dern similarities and he puts a lot of raw emotion into his singing. If you'd rather listen to someone who sings better, like bob Dylan ;-) more power to ya

Young ruined himself for me with that idiotic 'Monsanto Years' nonsense...

If I may respectfully disagree with your friend who said Neil plays all the wrong stuff in exactly the right places.....I would offer that Neil plays the right stuff in exactly the right places....he just doesn't play it like anybody else would.

Honestly I'd consider him one of the best singers and guitar players out there. Art is more than perfection. I'd consider it to be more about imperfection.

I don't see the similarity with Bruce Dern.

Neil Young not only writes great songs, but he is usually sending a story of angst with them, so his voice and guitar playing uniquely matches his storyline. As Jakedog mentions, Neil knows how to rile emotions with his songs and his voice is a huge part of it IMO. He is easily in my top 10 if not top 5.

The B3 player in my first band could do Neil perfectly. Yes, Neil's voice hangs around in a place that sounds falsetto and usually isn't...but as far as off key, I've never heard it. I'm glad he was and is still around...

I can hear that in the voice. Never noticed it before.

Sorry to say, you've ruined John Wayne for me.

i love Neil. I think he has a great voice and is a solid song writer. lyrically, there are better, sure, but i'm picky about lyrics. there aren't a lot of lyricists that i respect, honestly. i'm a song writer myself, and like Neil, i wasn't born with a golden throat. it doesn't stop me from creating the songs that are inside of me. Neil is one of the greatest we will ever have.

people can keep lapping up karoke singers, 'the voice' 'america's got talent' stars all they want.

Me? i'll keep right on listening to the true artists. YMMV

    I still like him though.
