Gotta love the Mermen. I got to see them a couple of times in the early 2000s. Both times were very rocking experiences.
I like how they're not your traditional surf band, with the cliche "BahBahm, Bomp" surf beat, and Ventures-ish guitars, and yet, they are as cool and as surf-conjuring as can be
The Mermen are pretty cool. This is my personal favorite track of theirs, their version of Miserlou is second only to Dick Dale’s. I think it shows up around the 4 or 5 minute mark:
I'm playing that in my relatively newly-formed (and still nameless!) surf-ish band. It's so very much fun. We've got a real good trumpet player, too, and that helps , tons
Love em!! Saw them live about ‘97...bought a bunch of their discs, recalling Jim Thomas hernia-worthy, 6 amp rig, one for each string!
The Mermen rock!
Well of course! What surf band doesn’t owe it to the King of Surf Guitar to learn one or two of his songs? Miserlou is tons of fun.
The Ventures are mandatory too. Might I suggest Journey To The Stars?
When I play it, I split the difference between the Ventures version and the MOAM cover:
My fave MOAM
From my former neck of the woods of 22yrs & I failed to see them in all that time even though i was aware of 'em.
That’s a great cover too, the Rezillos were a cool band.
Ever hear of the Del Vipers? I picked up their album pretty cheap direct from Double Crown on their eBay shop. Really fun stuff, great punky energy, good chops, and lots of good hooks.
