I put together an Esquire recently and started working my way thru Rob DiStefano's pickup offerings. Have a listen and see what you think- comments welcomed.

Gear is Fender body, Allparts neck, Glendale saddle, Fender bridge, 250k pots, .033 mf tone cap, .022 wah cap, .010-.046 D'Addario strings, heavy pick, tweed Champ on 3.5-ish. No effects: guitar -> amp.

I kind of fumbled around on the 1st video while trying to decide what to play and then got more consistent about testing tones in the 2nd and 3rd ones. Ignore my sucky playing and focus on the guitar tones.

Sweet...nice job with the videos! I was interested in hearing Rob's pickups...your videos audition them nicely.

I also dig the Esquire you built...probably because I built one just like her! :)

Nice lookin axe! Unfortunately the demo isn't really helpful for me. My personal taste, but the amp has got to be louder to get any sort tone that I like. It all sounded muddy and lifeless. Don't get me wrong, with a build like that (awesome parts, awesome electronics, awesome pickups) plus a great little amp, I'm sure you can get some really fantastic tones. But this is just not doin' it for me.

I preferred the Bakersfield Lion, but I feel like the other two pups would get brighter, punchier, and have a tighter bass response if you turned the amp up a bit.

To me, original Lion (which I too have) and Bakersfield were the best sounding ones. Having played the Lion for more than a month its easily recognizable sound. Those two are different for sure, for different purposes I'd say. Either one would work for me, but bakersfield wouldnt get used without tone control.

I'm glad that you went through all this just to let us hear the differences. If I need another Cavalier someday I now know how the other ones sound too.

I'm going to go back and do that later, but I'm going to have to move the amp across the room or something; that thing was so loud sitting 5' behind me that it made me flinch at times. When I miss a note sometimes it's because I'm anticipating getting hurt. I don't know how people play that loud.... When I crank my Deluxe Reverb, I do it down at the barn with a 25' cable, the amp is in the barn and I'm _outside_. And it STILL hurts my ears! :!:

Frankly, I'm really not an electric guitar player- I just mess with this stuff. I'm a bluegrass flatpicker first and 90% of my actual electric guitar playing is Western Swing, church stuff, and Hank Williams-era country. As much as I'd like to crank it up, my playing situations just don't allow it. Yet.

There's a thought! I've got this old 1930 something or another in the shop. Since it's a beat-up old guitar that's not worth much, maybe I could slap a couple of Lions in it.

    Something like this, maybe?

I'm liking the Bakersfield, with the Nashville running a close second. I'm a little concerned about all the review's I've heard about the Bakersfield, even Rob says it could be very bright, but man I like the tones your getting out of it.

They all sounded good although a ture bypass hoody would have definitely improved the tone.

Fret Tech Esquire with a Nashville Lion wrapped in ivory 50s-like meat cutter's string. You gotta try one. Sub 6 lbs. Esquire. Impressive.....

Thanks for the great demos. All pickup demos should be like this (if you ask me) - straight into the amp, no effects, no mic distortion on the camera, each pickup shown in the same context so you can compare properly.

They all sound great - but I'd prefer the bakersfield in an esquire set up too for maximum tonal variation. I've not bought Rob's pickups but the neck he sold me is still on my No1 tele. Great service.

Post Script It took Rob less than two hours to build and send my pickup! Outstanding service!

I added a couple more videos. Rob sent me a Tele-neck-sized Strat pup so I combined it with the Bakersfield in my Nashville Tele. (I would've put the Nashville Lion in the Nashville Tele, but I sent it to a friend for him to try). Here's the results of that:

And then he sent me one called a "Panther" but didn't tell me anything about it. I thought I'd combine it with a neck humbucker I'd used previously so I tossed 'em both in my former Esquire. After listening to this video, I think the bridge pup needs to be raised a little bit and I will probably go back and do that shortly, but here's where I'm at with it right now:

I'm really liking the 'bucker and 'bucker/Tele sounds.
