I'm currently building a Telecaster with a strat neck and a strat neck pick up.

The objective is to have a classic-but-not-so-classic Tele for rock and country with maybe a hipshot b-bender.

the pickguard will be copied heavily inspired after this one I had viewed on this forum

So far, I've built the body (a few years ago and it needs a little work), found a used strat neck, already had the neck pick up. I have the pots and selector.

    PROJET TELE EN COURS1.JPG

I still need to order the bridge and the bridge pick up.

I think I'll go for a Wilkinson Top load. Any good or bad experience with it?
I'll have to fill the holes i had drilled .

For the pick up i want a cheap vintage overwound type. I think GFS or Iron gear?

Sorry, no experience with top loaded Wilkinson, but I have used the stringthrough Wilkinson on several guitars and think the work great for the price.. If you have holes drilled for string through I would use them.. Just my opinion.. Cool looking guitar any way..

    I've received parts this week.
For the bridge pick-up, I've decided to try GFS, and for the bridge, a wilkinson (by xxxxxx) convertible (string through and top load both possible)
I'm still trying finishes on scrap wood.
I'll post photos as the project progress...

Little by little, mistake after mistake :) (not so many). It looks OK to me.

I've chosen the finishing : amber yellow with medium brown pore filler.

The neck fits OK, The pickguard looks OK (not perfect but but can be fixed ) and I haven't drilled the neck pick-up hole yet.

Too bad you weren't building an offset that pickguard would go nicely

Trial assembly: everything seems to fit nice and snug.

A photo "in context": I think it's going to look cool.

I've ordered the B-Bender (Hipshot B & G bender and D tuner), I hope I'll learn how to play with that thing.

Yesterday it was sanding day. Today, it was staining (amber/yellow) :

After sanding, sanding and a little bit of sanding, I can say sanding is not my favorite part of this build o_O.

Now it's time for the first clear coats:
I'm a little disappointed by my pore filler that looks good on the small veins but looks way too greyish on the large ones :(.

The back shows beautiful flames :)

I've decided how this guitar will be wired.

4 positions switch classic wiring except I've switched pos 3 and 4 so the positions that I use the most, Neck alone and Bridge alone are like on a 3 way switch Tele and easy to get.

This way I will have :
    Pos 1 - Bridge
Pos 2 - Bridge and Neck in parallel
Pos 3 - Bridge and Neck in series
    Pos 4 - Neck

Maybe I'll tweak the tone cap or treble bleed values but it should be something like that:

While the clear coats are curing, a little soldering.

    P9300170.JPG

Not professional looking but it should do the job. I'll just have to wire the pickups and the ground wire from the shielding when it's done.
    P9300173.JPG

I haven't soldered the treble bleed as I plan to experiment with different values.

I have a similar 4 way except my 2 and 3 are reversed from yours. It us a nice progression from neck to bridge.

I have a little concern about the in 2 p-u's in series position as my neck p-u is pretty hot.

The GFS tele bridge pick-up is 7.2 k. The Bill Lawrence neck pick-up is 10.9 k. I hope they won't sound too muddy in series.

One more week to wait before wet sanding, buffing and final assembly.

I couldn't help test fitting (placing parts without screwing them on) to have a preview of the approaching end result.

Maybe a little too orange and the filler is too grey but all in all, I'm not too far from what I wanted :)
    PA110174.JPG

and the back is nice too
    PA110181.JPG

and I will certainly put pin-up decals on it

Now I just can't wait to know how it's gonna sound ;).
