Just heard from my wife that the son of one her close college friends took his own life yesterday. Thirteen years old. Star student, star wrestler, textbook American family. It is thought today that bullying was the deciding factor. Just goes to show that even popular kids with everything going for them can feel like there is no way out. As the father of a kind of awkward and not so popular thirteen year old boy, this scares me, and breaks my heart beyond belief. I can't imagine not having him in my life every day, and I mean to tell him that every chance I get. Talk to your kids. Be a pain in the ass, and dig into their personal business. We're parents, it's our job. Just because it seems like everything is dandy, doesn't mean it is. His parents never saw this coming.
