Anyone tried the new TAD 12ay7 premium select released last year? Im interested in anyone who has used it in a 5e3 circuit.
I have tried jj and eh tubes but would like to try the tad. I dont mind the jj ay7 which I have left in for now.
The eh seemed very touch sensitive and a bit shrill. I would probably buy NOS if I could but they are expensive and difficult to source locally in the UK.
    any comments appreciated

Ironic you ask this, as I just ordered the High Grade TAD 12AY7 to try out in V1 in a Blues Deluxe Reissue. I have a not too old NOS 12AY7 that started going bad, giving off a sizzling bacon sound. I realize the BDRI is not a 5e3 but can say that I do prefer 12AY7 in V1 in my amp. Have an EH 12AY7 in there now, not quite as good sounding though. Hoping the TAD will sound as good as, or close to the NOS one.

I'll be happy to report back on my thoughts on the TAD High Grade version once it arrives.

That would be great. Looking forward to your comments. At around £20 here in the uk its not cheap so I am hoping it lives up to the price tag. Im not hoping for miracles though but it would be nice to have another good option out there.

Kev, the TAD High Grade 12AY7 arrived and I gave it a good listen. I thought it sounded slightly better than the EH 12AY7, a bit smoother. On a whim, I tried a NOS JAN Phillips 12AT7 for comparison. Looks like the 12AT7 is staying in V1 for now. Can't say anything bad about the TAD 12AY7, may try it in a couple of other amps. Time will tell. Tis a very subjective thing, these tubes.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the report. I know it comes down to taste, speaker type and several other factors haha. I might just try the tad soon. Still keeping my eye open for Nos though.
    Cheers
