Visited a music store today that had a few nice Custom Shop Fenders. A mix of strats and teles. The strangest one was this Jason Smith Masterbuilt 51 Nocaster. To me it doesn't look like a Nocaster. It has the "Telecaster" in the logo, with the quotes. And its a white guard. It has the Jason Smith custom shop logo on the back of the headstock. Just wondering what others think of this. How can it be called a Nocaster? It did have the big U chunky neck.

It cannot be a Nocaster with the word Telecaster on it.

He brought me the COA. It definitely says Jason Smith Masterbuilt 51 Nocaster. I have never seen anything like that. I questioned "Telecaster" on it.

It appears to have the neck pocket lip like a Nocaster would. Maybe Fender considers a fat U shaped neck + neck pocket lip = Nocaster?

The radius on the body edge looks weird, or is that a lighting trick in the photo?

Pick guard removal and or neck to verify.

Fender is more likely to reproduce lip on a model they call a nocaster but that does change from year to year.

IMHO (excluding the label) the nocaster and 52' base models only semi-reliably differ in neck shape and the octave dot spacing. The base model is often what will be marked on the certificate.

As a masterbuilt, the person who ordered may have wanted a late 51'/ early 52 telecaster. The reason I think this is may be the case is because the current 52 tele base has wide spaced 12th fret dots, when that wouldn't be correct until 53.
