Looking good john!
Well, whatever it is, it's nice looking wood.
I took the body/cap out of the clamps last night. Didn't get around to cleaning up the edge yet.
Unfortunately I noticed the sapwood strip down the middle is slightly off center. It must have slipped a bit when I was gluing and clamping. In my haste and enthusiasm at getting into another guitar project I made an amateur mistake. I should have used a couple indexing pins. Jeez I'm a bit annoyed with myself.
I'll have to clean it up tonight before I can say how far off it is... but looks to be a couple mm. Maybe it won't be that noticeable.
I don't usually ask for opinions on the next steps for my builds... but I am having a hard time deciding on what colour binding to use on the top. My 3 choices are black, cream and tortoise.
Any opinions ?? I think I need a nudge.
I'll say cream!
Although I bet if you did a heavy (say 1/2 round over) the alder would kind of look like binding. Just a thought. It will be awesome either way.
I would think cream but the idea of black is intriguing . I know , not much help but I'm just as indecisive on my own builds
It depends on the pickups. Are you going chrome, black or gold pickups? I would say black if you are going black pickups. Without looking at the pickups I would actually love to see some wooden binding - like flamed maple veneer. I think that would really set the body off big time.
I don't know about the round over... it could end up looking like hell, and then it's too late.
I'm going with a Peruvian Walnut neck and a 3x3 Headstock configuration. I've got enough leftover rosewood to do a matching headplate, but it's a bit too short for a 6-in-line headstock...
Haven't decided on a fretboard wood yet.
Got any birdseye maple John? That would look pretty sweet as a fret board.
I don't... but that would look nice... so I might have to get some.
I was thinking cream binding as well, but then thought about Maple binding. That would go well with a Maple FB too.
What color is the pick guard? I kinda like black for both of them.
There isn't going to be a pickguard. I don't want to cover up all that beautiful wood.
If it isn't too late, my vote is for cream.
I'm think the red of the tortoise with the rosewood might be a subtle but sharply dressed look.
But some other stuff would have to match. Time for water wet with sample kind pictures.
Tortoise was my first pick as well, but after talking to a few people I've decided to go with cream... and a couple cream soapbar P90s.
The furnace in the shop fired up first try the other day. I hope that's a sign of no trouble with it this winter.
So that means I spent some time out there this weekend.
I glued up a headplate that matches the body and designed an asymetrical 3x3 headstock.
Also cut out my neck blank from Peruvian Walnut and a Wenge fretboard.
Looking good John!
