Interesting, playing in a genre specific band and playing to general audiences is a bit of a mare. You get 5% of the audience who think you shouldn’t be doing anything that’s not true to the genre but if you do songs the hard core fans know that were never hits no one else likes them.

You may get some ideas from Italian Surf Academy, if you're not familiar with them. IIRC, they've done some rearranged standards of various kinds, possibly including some pop ones.
Most of the sound track from Pulp Fiction is instrumental music.
Given the OP's preferences as stated in a different thread, I'd think he'd jump at the chance to do some of these.
Secret Agent Man sounds even better in Spanish. Check out El Hombre Secreto from the Repo Man soundtrack.
Lots of Beatles tunes.
Just to add a few more...2-tone ska tracks (especially ones with harmonic minor melodies) injected with caffeine and sped waaaaaay up would make a fantastic suite of surf band tracks.
