I have 2 really nice leather straps. They are great if you have neck heavy guitars because the back side is kind of sticky keeping the guitar in place. I don't have a neck heavy guitar anymore and I am not liking it that these straps are grabbing on to my shirt. It looks ugly if playing out (I have a cool little gig next week) with the shirt being pulled up and down, here and there. Is there a way to smooth out the back side of leather straps?

You can burnish the flat side of leather, if it is thick enough, and not just a thin suede lining. If you pick up some gum tragicanth at your local tandy and a proper wood or bone "slicker" and some elbow grease. There are videos on it. Alternately you could glue and sew some smooth grained leather to the inside shoulder, or have someone experienced with leather do it

Your style team should be adjusting your shirt when you put the guitar on and take it off. :p

Seriously, I have the same problem when I wear hawaiian shirts, they end up all over the place. If I were a good enough player people would just assume that is part of my look. i like the grip of the suede side of the strap but I will try flipping it over to smooth things out.

Friends - THIS is what they are talking about when they use the tdpri term bumched shrit.

    It's a thing.
Your style team knows this, and will just smile & pat your shoulder when you present this way.

    Peace - Deeve

I was going to suggest having someone just stitch a piece of smooth leather on the underside.

    .

Flip the strap over. Smooth side down.

Unless you have one of those straps from the 80s with all the metal studs embedded in it. Then you're on your own.

Last week I got tired of my falling apart pants belt so I went over to Tandy, bought the bargain vegetable tanned strap for $5, used my drill press (and sandwiched between wood blocks each time) to drill all the holes rather than buy the hole stamp, used the old buckle, stained it, oiled it, and it's working.

You could buy two of those $5 straps for the extra length and lash them together to the right length, keeping one smooth side down against the shirt.

The back side is ugly for me.
(Only $4.72 on Amazon. I shouldn't be complaining.)

A lot of good ideas here but if it was me, I'd just go buy a nice nylon strap for gigging and not worry about messing up a nice leather strap.

    Simplest solution: Buy another strap.

I use LM Products SureLock poly straps - and love them!
