I was just listening to Skip James the other day and was struck by how different he sounded compared to other blues artists of the time. I know that he tuned his guitar to D minor, which really gives his songs an uneasy feeling. I can't imagine Skip playing a barbecue or juke joint and motivating people to dance.
That's about as blue as you can get. Incredible.
The original recorded version is one of my favourite songs, of any kind.
