I signed up for a year of Sirius XM for my car about 14 months ago. Now they finally tracked me down again and sent me a bill for $175 for another year. That's a lot more than I paid the first time. I'm wondering if it's worth it and whether they will call me with a lower rate if I don't bite on this one? I'm also wondering how long until they shut off my service?

I got the service for free for 6 months when I bought my new car. I listened to it for a total of about 30 minutes in 6 months. Any price higher than free is too much IMHO.

I agree. I mean, it is very good, but once the initial period ran out on my newest car, I figured I'd just use my iPod/iPhone/iPad.

Those guys from Sirius don't take no for an answer though! I can't believe how many pieces of mail I've had from them asking me to renew.

Don't pay until after they turn off your service, then call them and see what kind of specials they have.

In my case, I have 2 radios, one in my truck and one on my motorcycle. Both I paid a year for, and I've never had to pay since then. Yet my radios keep working and working. Its been 6 years on the motorcycle.

I love Sirius! Couldn't go on a roadtrip without it.

We bought a new car a few months ago and the sales guy told us when the sirius gurus notified us to tell them no and they will make 2 more lower offers after the 3rd jump on it.It went from 185 all the way down to 75 bucks!I dig hair nation so I was hoping for a much reduced price. It worked.

you can call , ask for customer service department for an account specialist, they can give you a 50% discount, but not the first rep on the phone, they will tell you that dept doesn't even exist...they do

I finally paid for a lifetime account which isn't even advertised, the first rep says they don't exist..they do...they want you to pay $179/year .. I should have bought the lifetime 5 years ago when I first signed up..it was $350....

My renewal fee was also $175 this past December. I called them up and simply asked if they can do better. They offered me $104!
    I took it.

I'm not saying you will get yours dropped by 70 bucks, but definitely call them and ask them what they can do.

Yeah, I'd say cancel and play lets make a deal. Just be sure you're not auto-renewing...that was part of the deal I signed up for, so I have to officially quit before the term is due! I have a reminder note on the fridge.

Mine cost $187 to renew last spring, which is probably the $175 listed above plus tax and whatever. Never tried haggling with them. But it is great, I listen to it throughout the day - I have a radio that pops into a dock for my home stereo or car.

I don't have/don't want cable or satellite TV, so XM is my main link to the news media. Also good to have during power outages/emergencies. I wish it were cheaper, but considering the number of hours I listen, it's still a good deal.

You can listen to anything almost anywhere for $9.95 per month with Spotify.

Spotify has decreased my love for satellite radio.

    Pandora is free.

I'm assuming that everyone has an iPhone or one those Droid/Android/Fill-the-void phones.

I love it too. Now and then I take a break from Outlaw Country, my favorite, and expose myself to some good jazz or blues. Sirius stock apparently hasn't risen past its IPO--I learned that listening to Imus--so I don't think they're cutting a fat hog with the rates they're charging. I'm pretty happy to pay them.

You're also assuming that everyone has mobile data coverage wherever they go. And many people went for weeks with no internet access following hurricane Sandy and other big storms recently.

But the satellites are always up there. :)

Don't forget Bob Dylan and his Theme Time Radio Hour. I love that one too.

There are lots of places where cell phone coverage sucks. The satellite is always there. I have Pandora on my phone too but its no good for driving around town, it keeps buffering and pauses between songs.

And really, this thread is about renewing Sirius, not about all the other options people use to get their music.

I just renewed for 27 dollars for 6 months. You need to let the existing service lapse and not want a renew. They will call/mail you a new offer maybe this. The play is tell them that you dont want to use the credit card and you want a bill sent in the mail. They will tell you that it will add a 2 dollar charge for this but do it. After another 6 months they will call you with the same offer. Its worked for me for 12 months so far.

One year ago, this week, I traded my vehicle in that had a Sirius receiver. I had my subscription to Sirius four about 4 or 5 years, and still had three months left. So I called them and canceled it, telling them that I had new vehicle that didn't have a Sirius receiver and they could just send me back the balance of my subscription. So they start right in offering me a new radio and extend my subscription, and I held firm and said no and that I really wasn't that happy with their service, programing changes, and drop in audio quality over the past couple of years. After 20 minutes on the phone they agreed to cancel it.
Now 3 months later I'm in some store trying to make a purchase with my debit card and it gets declined. I log on to my bank account and see the Sirius had just "renewed" my subscription for the $180 some dollars, AFTER all the time I spent canceling it. So now I'm furious and called them up to get put on hold for 30 minutes. When I got to talk to someone and explained it all, they tried to sell me a new radio. I yelled NO I DO NOT WANT THIS SERVICE! Then she offered to give me a new radio and keep the money they just took out of my account and extend it to cover for a two year subscription. I told her that if they do not refund all my money right this minute I'm going to my bank and getting them involved with theft charges. She then apologize and said they would return my money. I did go to the bank and they even called them, and the money was back in my account the next morning.
Now I use Pandora, Spotify, or my iPod, and WILL NEVER even think of having Sirius again (even though I have friends that are Sirius DJs).

Let it expire and wait a while. They will send you emails with slashed down prices and beg you to renew.
I traded in my vehicle and my new one came with free Sirius, so I called XM to cancel my subscription and delete my old car's radio ID from my account. They kept sending me letters and emails to beg me to reconnect it for free for 3 months and then super cheap rate after that. I had to call them 3 different times to tell them "I do not own this vehicle anymore !". So they will beg and beg and beg you to reconnect it.

My free 3 months expires today. When I got the renewal letter with the crazy price a month or so ago I called them and asked if they had any deals. I got 6 months for $35. It would have been $25, but to get Howard Stern (main reason I listen to it) on XM needed an upgrade.
