I am learning September Gurls by Big Star and can play the different parts. However the way I have learned it, I use a capo at the 2nd fret for the chords and then a capo at the 7th fret for the lead. I want to be able to play the chords and switch to the solo (and outro) without moving the capo. Can anyone help? Its driving me nuts! I tried de-tuning the top string a whole step but that makes the chords difficult. Its the first lick in the solo which is the problem - a droning top string whilst hammering on 10th fret to 12th fret. So frustrating.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't hear a droning note in the solo.

I just had a quick look and there are guitar tabs out there for both guitar parts with a capo on the 2nd fret. Maybe have a look? Or if you are already set on your way to play it, I’d suggest just leaving out the top string drone part. It doesn’t seem worth the effort/not being able to play the song. Or get yourself a 7 string and tune the top extra string just for the drone part! Sorry, that’s the only fix I can think of...

    Great song, love Big Star!

That opening riff in the solo is really nice. I don't have a guitar handy, but maybe really try stretching your fingers to let the b on the first string ring out?

Something like this for the first two measures of the solo:

    ---7---------7-------7---------7-------7-------------7-----7--------
    --10-/-12--12-----10-/-12--12------10-/-12-----------------------
    ---------------------------------------------------11----9------7----
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't have a guitar handy, so YMMV

Found some live performances and he didn't make much of an effort to play the 'Gurls' solo note for note...

Thanks for the suggestions. I can't stretch that far sadly and still have the top string ringing out. I worked it out, I can de-tune the top string to D, and then barre the 7th fret. The chords still work except I have to leave out the top string on the A, G and Em7 shapes.

Love the way they don't rush this song. It's so easy to speed it up.
