It will all be driven by industry and then it will filter down.

And I for one welcome every bit of it just like Cole said it won’t be in my lifetime.

And if you’ve ever driven through West Virginia where the big double train Fed ex truck is a blazing by at 85 miles an hour I’ll tell you one thing - I trust a computer chip more than whoever the hell is driving that thing !

Self-driving convertibles FTW. I'll be in the back sipping a cold adult beverage.

Don't computers fly and land planes? Why, driving a car should be simple in comparison.

In theory it could eliminate stop lights and signs - all the cars would need to communicate with each other and modulate their speed so they don't collide as they pass through the intersection. That would make for an exciting commute! Also it should help eliminate traffic congestion because as long as the cars are communicating, they can follow each other closer, the lanes don't have to be so wide, so where there's a 4 lane HW you could reconfigure it to be 5 or 6 lanes. It should be so much safer that you could start eliminating a lot of the design features that are there to help you survive a crash, so cars can get lighter and have more room inside.

But, yeah, if you think about how often computers crash or get hacked, it's scary.

It is amusing watching all these jets taking off and landing in Memphis (mostly Fed Ex) but I am afraid the jets are destroying the atmosphere.

With all these horrendous train crashes they still have, which should be child's play next to cars, and they cannot get the trains right so what evidence is there really that this stuff will work reliably?

Lots of space in the air and runways are big and empty when you land and take off.

I think we picture ourselves owning those self-driving cars. I don't think that's what's going to happen. We'll be calling them up and having them pick us up, like a taxi, and take us where we want to go.

Maybe we'll "subscribe" to a service.

How's it working for Boeing with the 800 MAX? As for cars, there seems to be too many other variables to be safe given the shear volume of other cars on the road and other factors. Maybe in a decade or two. Then what if hackers gain control of your car? I already get unnerved in my 2019 Outback with Eyesight when it decides to 'correct' me. After all, I love driving in other people's lane....

For folks saying, "it won't happen in my lifetime", are you assuming you'll be among the first to be run over by one? They're already here and will be widespread sooner than you think!

How about self playing Telecasters? A lot of you are going to be unhappy about that, no? Where does it all end?

A self-driving car isn't so different from a taxi with a reticent driver.

Self driving car and autonomous vehicle are both misnomers. They need to come up with a more accurate term; maybe Population Control Vehicle?

One of my family members is a behavioral psychologist... he is working on the driverless car for a major manufacturer... the aspects he works on are fascinating to hear him discuss... and his fears are all OUTSIDE the part he is working on (the reverse Gell-Mann problem) which is to say, he thinks his part will work great... but the parts he doesn't work on, he is thinking they will fail because of that....

Which I appeal to him that that is funny for a behavioral psychologist to fall for something that he should know is just a perception issue... he frowns when I say this and he says, 'well, yeah, but, I'm still worried'

I dig people... they are so... them.
