Get out and vote on Ron Ellis for the Telecaster
If you know where to get a set, I'd gladly try them!
Julian Lage gets great tones with them.
I have been unable to get a reply to emails and understand there's a LONG wait for pickups.
Id love to try a set but don't care for his business model. Forking out money for pickups in advance doesn't work for me as his wait times are any where from 1 to 2 years from what I've read.
With his wait times and sound customer service, will you still care when they show up? I understand you will get the pleasure of starting a thread about where your pick ups are and that Ron won't reply to you even though he took your money, which can be fun but beyond that whats the point. X sounds great with Ron's pickups maybe true but X also gets pickups from Ron when he wants them not so true for regular players
I've played a LOT of different Tele pickups but never Ron's. I'm definitely curious to see what they're all about.
If you have DEEP, DEEP, DEEP Pockets then here's your chance to try Ron Ellis pickups. You rarely see Ron's pickups advertised and when you do the asking price is usually equal to the cost of a new USA made Telecaster. I have never played a Tele with RE's so cannot make any kind of valuation on how they sound but, for the asking price these days, they should have a distinguished sound that sets them apart from all other Tele pickups of the same type.
Seems like a nice easy seller to buy from. Maybe it’s the price or the purchasing hurdles he puts up.
Interesting use of the word, "should".
I've never tried them but i'm sure i'd like them if I got a free set and could sell them for a bunch of money with buyers scrambling to buy them from me.
There's only so much you can do with a traditional pickup. Not sure what secret sauce he uses that makes them better than the hundreds of other pickups out there.
Seems unlikely that they would appeal to everyone considering different amps, speakers, cabs etc people are using with them.
I used it in the context of indicating a desirable or expected state.
Sorry no trades
Sorry I will not weigh the pickups
I will not take pictures in natural sunlight
I will not compare vs. every pickup every made
I will not prepare sound samples
I will not carbon date the wire used
I will use a micromete and measure the wire
I will not answer questions about why so much
I will not answer questions about whether I am the original owner
I will not answer questions about the shade of the color black that these are
I will not get a handwriting expert to verify Ron's signature on them
I will not ship in a climate controlled method
I will not include overnight shipping to Singapore for free because you need them
I will not calculate 134 varieties of shipping so that you can select one that saves you 12 cents and costs me 2 hours.
Ahhhhhhh that feels great
Holy smokes I thought I was reading a Dr. Seuss book. I kept waiting for:
I do not like them here or there.
I do not like them anywhere.
I do not like green eggs and ham.
I do not like them Sam I am.
I still wish Ron would initiate a waiting list where one didn't have to pay up front and then wait two years for the pickups. Seems like it would eliminate the negative feedback he receives.
That wouldn't work. It would reduce the aloofness and impression of exclusivity that are necessary to make you think it's worth it.
Well stated Rigatele. I don't mind waiting but don't think I'm ready to give Ron ( or any other winder) a two year interest free $300 loan.
I‘ve found a pair of his Telly pkups preowned in germany:
That is 869$!
For a pair of used single coil pickups.
A pair of David Barfuss pkups is about 200€, and he‘s a nice guy wounding his pickups within a week or two even if you’ve got custom wishes. Also a one man show and he‘s also got a regular job. His pickups are fantastic, got a pair in my Thinline and they sound like vintage heaven. I don’t know any better sounding vintage single coil.
If some VIP‘s would play his pickups or Nacho Banos would put them inside his Tellys no one would ask for Ellis pickups.
I have one of his neck pickups in a sunburst tele custom(custom shop build). It is really outstanding. Superior frequency response in all ranges. For clean to mildly dirty sounds its unreal.i paid 300.00 dollars used. Thats a little to expensive but its nice enough that im unlikely to ever sell it. I equate these to original Klons or dumble amps. Very nice, but not 5x the price as good.
There is a two year (or more) wait for a KOT pedal, but you don’t pay until yours is ready to ship. Not sure why he needs $300 up front. It’s not like Ron won’t be able to sell them if you pull out of it.
This has been my argument all along. I could even see myself putting the money down if the wait times were shorter ala Don Mare. I've just read too many posts about guys waiting 2+ years with little communication for Ron.
