Keep a base in your homeland, just in case you have to return at a later date. Here in the UK loads of people left for Spain, and now can't afford to return now their circumstances have changed.

Rather than buy a place abroad, rent one for 6 months. If you get bored, you can soon go somewhere else. I intend to sell my house and buy two apartments; live in one, rent the other one out and use the income to rent abroad. That way I keep a foothold at home, plus get the freedom to move around.

I'm a Brit but have visited Costa Rica and loved the place. The locals told us that the USA has (had?) an agreement which involved Costa Rica selling Coffee and fruit to the USA at "beneficial" prices on the basis that the USA would provide military protection if Costa Rica was ever threatened. In this way, Costa Rica avoids the necessity of having an army.

As things are, I dream of retiring and getting out of the UK.

I wasn't actually referring to Slim's comment, but to the comment he overheard re: too many Mexicans. We all know that if you want earthquakes, you can get them right there in California; and if you wanted non-potable water, well I guess you could retire in Flint!

I'll probably retire to a different county, just to be further away from metro Atlanta. But, another country, no thank you.

Retired to France more than a year ago.
Good food, good wine, good people, a good health care system.
    More affordable than the U.S.

If you have a parent or grandparent born in Poland, Ireland or Italy there's a good chance you qualify for citizenship, and if you're a citizen of a European Union country you can live in any EU country. Your spouse can tag along with you with little or no problem.

I was going to add that Costa Rica has no standing army...less chance of a coup...but didn't think it would matter to anyone. I've been there a couple of times for work and loved it. And there are enough English speaking locals and ex pats that language isn't too big of an issue.

why don't you split the difference and move to Scotland? Nobody understands anybody and they all get along pretty well and in Summer you can wear a coat.
