Okay, will be hopefully retiring in a year or so. Have been reading about how cheap it is to retire in places like Costa Rica, Belize, Mexico compared to the United States.

Anyone else thinking this way, or have already done it ?

Yeah, a non-rich person can live like a rich person in a lot of places because your dollar stretches farther...this includes the worries of kidnappings, robberies, etc

I knew a guy who was a diplomat and had lived all over the world.
He said he was definitely going to retire to Costa Rica.

I don't think my health insurance transfers, so I'll be staying right here.

your best bet is to visit any places you are considering moving to, and rent for a couple months and see what you are getting into, before making the big move.

its very easy to use google and get to a forum on expatriates in various countries, to find out the good, the bad, and the ugly. Beware the real estate and relocaction specialist lurking for fresh commision though.

Get a pro and con list and include hospitals, community.
Ex pat taxes, etc. foreign parasites. (both little and big) lol.
You are probably not thinking of being a snowbird, since you
are already in a nicer climate.
We know some that did, and came back. Decided to just travel.
If it is just to save money in future years. hmm..

Check out the poorest areas, too. Not just the tourist traps.
You may think you can "insulate" yourself from these folks.
But, you may be incorrect...which, that's okay for some people, and not so okay for others...especially maybe not the HOA-inclined types:lol:

I moved from the US to England several years ago. Definitely not cheaper, and I’m not retired.

But just to clarify...there is such a thing as dual-citizenship. I have citizenship rights over here, including full medical, etc.

So, check the country, check their rules.

Yes, we plan on taking some trips so we can see first hand if the rumors and internet hype is true. Talk to expats that are there and look at the pro,s and con,s involved.
Some say that you can live well for 1200.00 a month.
That's alot less than here in the states. But the grass always looks greener doesn't it.
Will have to do alot of research.

    Thanks
    Bill

I hear good things about Panama as well, and there are some American communities in Mexico people rave about, cheap, and good, healthcare, and 90% of the little towns are American retirees. A internet search will get all the info for you.

Costa Rica is stable, has a good health care system and I'm pretty sure you can own land there. The big advantage for Belize is that English is the official language. Health care is spotty, though. Panama has a lot of ex pats due to the canal.

There's a lot of info out there to help you decide. Good luck.
