Just watched this 2 hour Queen documentary on ABC TV (Australia)

What an interesting 2 hours. Included material never heard before. Well I certainly hadn't.

I took a bit of an interest in Queen back in their very early days and enjoyed a lot of what they where doing right through to 'Day at the Races'.

    Then they lost me.

A band that started out brilliantly. Writing absolute rock classics but ended up penning utter crap that (to my ears), got worse with each new album.

Still, a very entertaining couple of hours.:)

    Yeah,

Quite moving and sad in parts.

Also makes me wonder where those years have gone.

Just finished watching it! Didn't know they made zero money for years. Bloody parasitic management and record companies!

I had no idea about that either. They were really screwed financially.

Just ordered a copy of this DVD through JB Hi Fi as my tv has lousy reception.

Really want to watch it through again with a decent picture and sound.

Any idea what axe Brian May was playing torwards the end on one track.

Looked like a black Strat ?

First time I'd seen him play anything than the 'Red Special' and the odd acoustic.

Haven't really followed or watched much of them over the years.

I guess that song and 'theme' was begging for a black strat though:)

I saw em' in San Antonio in 73', before they "broke".
Those four guys sounded astounding and huge.
    Brilliant!

Wish I'd had the chance to see them live. Yes, I'd imagine a big, big sound.

I guess they used a lot of 'tricks' and smoke & mirrors to duplicate a lot of their stuff live.?

Perfectly summarised. I applaud their bass player for having the good taste to keep out of the way while the other two plundered Queen's 'reputation' ruthlessly. Were they really that desperate for the money?

    could this be it?

"He also opted out of using the Red Special for the "Play the Game" video, using a knock-off guitar based on a Fender Stratocaster since at one point in the video, Queen singer Freddie Mercury would snatch the guitar from him and "throw" it back to him (also the reason he used a cheap Satellite-badged copy instead of a real Strat)."

from the wikipedia article on "the red special"

I wish I'd seen Queen live in the 80's. A great band and a good doco

It's hard to believe it's the same band.

When you listen to some early stuff like 'Fairy Fella's Master Stroke' or 'Flick of the Wrist' then listen to crap like 'Fat Bottomed Girls' or 'Another One Bites The Dust', it sounds suspiciously like they once had a 'fifth' member who did all the songwriting/arrangements :eek:

They certainly had none of that amazing structure or writing ability after 'Day at the Races'.

    Thanks for the info furtherpale!

Well, that explains why Brian used other guitars sometimes !

Freddy was in the habit of snatching and throwing em ! :D:D

Early on they probably had a clear shared vision of what they were, and later on that broke down, and they lost direction.
