I just bought a pretty clean, original cone, quad of Fender labelled 10” CTS alNiCos, freshly pulled from a ‘74 Super Reverb!

I’ve been looking for a set of these for a while, and fortunately, the seller was looking for a more modern sound, so we made a deal.

I paid $250 +shipping for them! I’ve seen them going for a lot more, so I’m a pretty happy camper!

    A great bargain

    THese speakers are marvelous

Lots of misconceptions about them too (coming mainly from their place as the Super Reverb speaker)

CTS Alnico IS NOT OVERLY BRIGHT. It is far less bright than the jensens & other speakers of the period

CTS alnico ARE ALL MIDS: Yes. THey are middy! they are very mid-forward speakers: this is why they are the bees knees in the super reverb: they bring forward the mid highs ANDS MID LOWS as well

That's a score. Those speakers are worth it for sure.

I thought is was a good deal, thanks for confirming it. I’ve seen prices all over the place.

I already had a quad of ceramic CTS 10s that sound nice as well, but these will be my first CTS alNiCo 10s.

I think they will be, especially if they are in the condition I’ve been lead to believe they are in. I’ve seen prices all over the place. I’ve actually seen similar matched quads go for close to that with shredded cones.

I’ve also seen $800 being “asked” for similar quads, but I don’t know if they will actually fetch that!

I am not restoring a SR, so didn’t want to pay a premium for the Fender labels, and the seller didn’t make me.

He asked for $300 plus shipping, and I asked if he could do $250+ and he accepted!

He could have asked more, but it was just one of those right place at the right time deals. They were too vintage for his tuned down stuff, but just right for me.

Thanks @uriah1. Your (and others) praise of them were a big influence on my decision to find some!

I am awaiting delivery, but when I get them, if they aren’t “all that” I know who to come looking for! ;)

I already have a quad of Ceramic CTSs, and I like them a lot as well as a pair of Mojotone labeled EMI 1028ALP alnicos with the paper formers that are amazing, so I think these should make me pretty happy as well, depending on their actual condition of course!

I can’t wait to compare them with the 1028Ps to see if they sound as close in tone as I have always heard!

Good luck with that. I haven’t seen any locally in the couple of years I’ve been looking.

Those speakers in that Reverb.com sale appear to have been underwate...perhaps victims of Katrina???? Sad....and much overpriced imho.

I agree that the speaker’s you bought appear correct, JBG.

Slightly off topic, but what speakers were originally used in a 3 x 10" tweed Bandmaster?

Good score on the speakers! What are they going into?

Has anyone had a CTS alnico 10 from a Super reconed successfully by anyone currently in the reconing business? I paid about $50 for one a few years ago and it has some voice coil rub. I've heard that it is not worth doing since the repair price is comparable to that of a modern replacement speaker, like the WGS Veteran 10. I would use it in a standalone cabinet, not in a SR.

Thanks! Have a couple of 2x10 extention cabs that they will go in. I will be using them with several amps, including a Bassbreaker 15, Ibanez TSA15H, and a Fender Greta

I might have to search for a head that sounds like a super reverb now!
