I took a pretty big bite with my second build. A PRS for my son. I have a couple threads with pieces of this build but thought i would make a complete build thread. So here goes. Started with some downloaded plans. IMG_5948.jpg IMG_5946.jpg

I got some real nice quilted maple for the top. I had some old growth heart redwood left over from my sign making days so i used it for the body. Glued it up and cut it out

I marked out the contours and started routing. Making steps as i go, not really caring how perfect they are just trying to remove material.

Those little violin makers planes are well worth the money for work like this.

I had to build a hinged router sled to get the slope from bridge to neck. Worked like a charm.

I routed in the pickups and sanded for days. I took a whack at the knobs, still not sure if i will need to do any more with them. Waiting on knobs and electronics. Then i routed out the back cavity and made a cover out of the same maple as the top.

On to the neck. I decided to add a maple strip to the mahogany neck. I know i have a lot going on here as far as different woods but isnt that why we build our own. Routed the truss rod slot and cut the headstock angle and shape

It fits like a glove and is starting to look like a guitar. I left the heel very thick until i figure out some measurements there.

So the kid wanted the birds and why not i have never done inlays so this should be fun. Well it was for a while.
Until i figured out i put the 12th bird in the 11th fret! The good folks here walked me through what to do with it. Everything from scrap it and start over to add a flock of birds. Uhmm clouds and mountain tops were suggested. Haha. Well in an attempt to save the $45 ebony board i cut a patch and put a Z in the middle for my sons name. It actually turned out really cool and can only be seen in certain light. IMG_6157.jpg IMG_6158.jpg IMG_6164.jpg IMG_1978 (2).jpg

I cut a veneer out of the maple top wood for the headstock and it is clamped and drying currently.

Gorgeous! Can't wait to see the quilt pop out on that top. That's going to be beautiful!

That's a great looking guitar. The patch came out great - doing what you did makes it look very intentional and doesn't compete with the birds.

Thank you! I am a decent woodworker with some tools and all the time in the world.

That was kind of the idea, patch it but make it look like it was not a mistake. And yes it could even be more discreet in my book but it turned out and has a little story behind it

There was a time in my life when that may have had a totally different meaning.
