I often marvel these days at the great guitars that are out there that don't cost much. I thought it would be worthwhile to post some videos of professional musicians playing such inexpensive guitars. Here's one from the Posies doing an on-air performance at a radio station, with guitarist Ken Stringfellow playing an Gretecsh Electromatic Pro Jet.

Jay Farrar (Son Volt) plays an Electromatic Gretsch and an Epiphone Special II on tour. The band had a bunch of vintage gear stolen from their van in the 90's so that's probably why.

http://www.uberproaudio.com/ for a list of almost anyone's gear. The guy who comes to mind for me is Jack White...mostly because HE talks like he plays crap guitars. His gear list begs to differ. Even those Monkey Ward guitars are probably not cheap NOW as they probably were in the '60s. But what is "inexpensive"? Is a $600 Gretsch inexpensive? Not in my opinion, but compared to a $3000 La Cabronita, sure.

Nick Curran is one of my favorite players, and he loves playing cheap guitars. He liked to play ugly pointy 80's guitars when he toured with The Fabulous Thunderbirds just to cheese off the blues purists. Here's a video of him playing an SX (!):

The legendary bluesman Junior Kimbrough played some pretty awful guitars.

Chuck Prophet's main guitar, for years, has been a Squier Tele.

Not long ago, I saw the Flatlanders and their lead guitar player played an Epiphone Les Paul Special with p90s. Sounded great, but then, the guy was pretty good.

A TON of popular indie rock bands out there today are playing Epi Dots, Sheratons, and Casinos.

JJ Cale and Elvis Costello play Danelectro's I think....

Look at most old Blues guys and they were playing Kay, Harmony, Silvertone and the like because they couldn't afford a Gibson.

This guy- but the current production tribute to this early parts mongrel will cost about 10 times what Ed put into it.

    Great thread topic!

Mark Knopfler played a Fernandes Strat copy at times in the 80's, although it had a going over by John Suhr

When I think of cheap guitars I think of Hound Dog Taylor and the cheap Japanese guitars he used.
