I will give an example. Some bands when you hear a live version of a song you are left thinking what the hell was that. A little bit of leeway with the instrumental part I can tolerate but when the singer is just terrible to me it makes me wonder what was going on when recording. If you suck that much live. For example I have Sirius in my car and listen to Ozzys boneyard a lot and they often play a live version of Nightrain G&R and it sucks. I mean like half way through it my ears start to bleed.

Rest of the band is still tight and on it but his range is gone. All whispery up top.

And just to clarify something. I am not saying that a live performance from a singer should be spot on to the recorded version. But at least be somewhat in tune. I saw the Eagle's live and let me tell you Don Henley can sing.

Joe Elliot was bad in their heyday. I saw them on the Pyromania tour, and he couldn't cut it live, then

I didn’t see them but my wife did and said the Counting Crows vocalist was horrible and instead of singing actually just mumbled along and talked/spoke out the lyrics!

I saw the GooGoo Dolls a couple years ago, and the singer pretty much pointed the mic towards the audience on most of the high parts. Audience participation is good, but it was pretty obvious that he either just wasn't feeling it that night or could no longer get there. Plus he threw in a bunch of political nonsense, which always ruins a good live music performance.

What I find baffling is when a band sounds great live & not so great on the album. I've never been a big Black Crows fan. Then one night after work I'm flipping through channels & I find this freaking amazing band concert. Eventually, they played a song I knew (having not been a fan I only know a few).

Wow, just wow. Even though I now know what an amazing band that is (or was), I still don't like any studio albums.

    Ozzy.
Saw him a few years ago in Houston. Obviously prerecorded vocals throughout the show. He wasn't even holding the mic up to his face during some of the vocals.
He actually did a live vocal for the encore. That was way worse.

Ozzy is a big mystery. I have listened to some live stuff from him that is great and some that is well. Not so much.

Actually, I heard that he got his stuff together much better after that. I've never been much of a fan anyway but i wish him well

I’ve seen them live a couple times. Adam Duritz can sing. He does do a lot of off the cuff talking/theatrical type improvised stuff live sometimes.

Apparently, Zakk Wylde covered a lot of Ozzy's parts when he was in the band.

Lindsey may never be able to sing again since his vocal chords were damaged earlier this year during an emergency heart bypass surgery.

In his day he was great. Not Peter Green great, but not many were.

Yardbirds... Great songs and sound on record but Relf was pretty weak live.

On the other hand Ronnie Dio was great lIve.

John Mellencamp sounds like Tom Waits these days. And not in a good way.

CSN are notoriously hit and miss.

I want to throw in a few performers who blew me away vocally. Ray LaMontage... Jason Isbell was great, and his playing is outstanding. Marty Stuart and his band did a live version of “El Paso” that gave me chills. That was probably the single greatest performance I’ve ever seen in person . And, finally, there’s a trio of sisters whose group is called Joseph. Their harmonies were superb.

For a long time they were my all time favorite band. There is a live version of them as a dual album, I forget the name, I bought and he talks the lyrics in a lot of that and is pretty disappointing if you like his singing and the originals.

BUT I went to see them a few years ago here in Auckland, New Zealand worried it would be similar but was true to the originals. Was a great concert in every way. Great guitar sounds the works.

I think he went through some bad depression issues and either with that or part of the dealing with being a rock star and singing the same thing day after day, year after year he was trying to change it up for quite a while. Totally understandable from his perspective but crap if your a fan! :)

It seems like he has moved on from that point of view these days.

Re: The Black Crowes. Im a massive fan but I find all the albums but the first hard to listen to. I think they are a serious casualty of the loudness wars. Just overwhelming sub consciously despite me liking many of the songs. My secret hope is that get remastered in a much better way one day.
