    "Hey Vern, nice landing!"
Too bad you took the wrong valley turn, didn't have a formal flight plan submitted, no radio, etc.- time to hang it up, Vern.

Great story, but could have easily ended badly. The pilot made a mistake ( a series of mistakes from the news report ) but kept his head and managed to get it onto the ground.

Failed to plan properly, failed to navigate properly, and flew an underpowered plane into inappropriate terrain for its capabilities. It was sheer luck they made it to a safe and open place to land, but it looks and sounds like they didn't have appropriate survival gear for the conditions.

    Lucky doesn't equal heroic.

He dis-proved the saying: There are old pilots and bold pilots. But there are are no old bold pilots.

    by almost proving the statement.

These folks should be quaking in their boots. Instead, they're acting like Top Gun. I'm puzzled.

Might have been more noteworthy if the 'Polish visitor' had managed to ride the fallen tree down the river to find help.

Mistakes were made, but Vern's no fool. He said he's done flying.

Jeepers. Lucky that glacier happened along. Also lucky about not "riding that log" down the river. Sometimes a Great Notion. . . .
