Just wondering if this effect is leaning more towards a phase or some kinda vibe/roto/etc.

    What are your thoughts?

I'd never heard of this guy until I watched the HBO series "Vinyl", for which he wrote / performed the theme music:

I've now got his albums and want to see him if he tours the UK.

I think he's god damn fantastic. But I thought he sounded like Kermit the Frog at first. Took me a long time to get into him.

I'd never heard of Sturgill Simpson before - I'm both happy and angry with you for sharing this, happy to have heard it, and angry 'cause I can't play like that right now, and now will spend the next couple months frustrating myself 'til I figure out how.

    Thanks - and dammit!

I came to Sturgill Simpson through. a screaming cover version of Call To Arms which Umphrey’s McGee did when I saw them last year — Sturgill’s version is killer too, and although he can get a bit schmaltzy at times he makes a lot of really great music.

I also think he's pretty damn amazing, but I have a really hard time getting past his diction. He swallows his words and is darn near incomprehensible. He doesn't talk like that, I have no idea if the singing is the real him or an affectation, but whatever it is, I wish he could dial it back. I'd go see him live in a heartbeat, but don't think I could sit through one of his records.

Well this particular show is actually kind of uncommon for him. He usually plays acoustic, and has a lead guitar player with him. The acoustic stuff is obviously rad too, but its really cool seeing him play THOSE songs in such a different way.

unfortunately I find this site to be pretty inaccurate.

A lot of times, all the information is based on ONE pedalboard picture, or interview.

He definitely uses many more pedals than that.

He's also not known to play much electric, so his pedals/amps aren't super well documented.

I'm aware of the classic phase sound of country, especially Waylon, and Sturgill is a huge Waylon fan... So that would make sense.

However, this sounded more chorus/vibe than phase to me. But I've been playing acoustic for the passed 2 years, and haven't paid any attention to pedals, so I'm a little off my game!
