I picked this guitar up this week, thought I'd share...I worked in a music store around 85-86, when these first came out, or at least that's when I was first made aware of them. I always liked them a lot but never managed to snag one until now (I did have a non-bound TL62 for a long time). This one has the "A" SN on the bridge plate, which I understand to be pretty useless for dating purposes, and no date stamp on the neck, so it's kind of a mystery guitar as far as age. It has a little bit bigger neck than I remember most of the TL62's having, pickups/pots/switch all look original and untouched. The jack plate has been replaced with an electrosocket. The neck pup is pretty microphonic, so I'll probably put a set of OVs I have in it for now. Looks like a Basswood body, pretty light, weighs in at 7.4. Thought about converting to an Esquire as one of my favorites from the ones I tried working in the store way back when was a CAR Esquire, but I'll probably leave it a Tele for now.

Nice! I'm a pushover for CAR Telecasters. I love the figuring on the neck.

Very very cool, the double-bound tele in CAR is totally on my GAS list. It’s available locally at US$995, ooh so much temptation but I think I want a ‘65 PRRI more haha!

I do like it. In fact, to me it almost looks like alder.

Either way, congrats... Hopefully it is a player. Josh

Ya know, alder crossed my mind too. I assumed basswood because there wasn't much grain that I could see in the pocket, but I always think of basswood as having a lighter almost pinkish hue to it. Whatever it is it's very resonant unplugged.

I have a weird habit of trying to guess radius from certain photos, but I usually keep it to myself. I can't now:

    7.5" on that?

Beautiful Tele, I have a MIJ Strat from that era, good stuff came out of Japan back then. Curious about the saddles positions though. Is it intonated?

Did Fender commonly use basswood ever in certain models, regardless of country of origin? Let alone in the 80s?

Alder seems like the better guess.

I don't have any gages or anything to measure but I'm pretty sure it's 7.25, I think that's what most all of the old TL62s were.

    Thanks!

It's not too badly out of strobe as is, but I haven't really had a chance to mess with the intonation on it yet. I changed the strings and tweaked the truss rod a little (it had big flat wounds on it when I got it), but this weekend I'll work on it some more; I've been slammed all week and haven't had much time to play with it...

Was just curious. BTW my MIJ Strat is 7.25 radius and I think it was common on Japan Fenders of the era to have 7.25.

But CAR and rosewood... a KEEPER!
