Picked this beauty up the other day. I've been looking for one of these for a good price and at a tad under $500 shipped I couldn't pass it up. It was marked down because the switch tip is broken off but that s easily replaced. It has a few dings but nothing major. The color is Wine Red and it has a belly cut and bound neck, made in 2012. Fretboard is baked maple, I believe. Feels great. The neck is just perfect for my hands. I love everything about it. I'll try to get some better picks if it brightens up outside. lpspecial2.JPG lpspecial.JPG

Sweet! I'm starting to think about one of these myself.

How's the neck? Standard slim taper?

Hey davenumber2, does the 2012 Special have P100s or P90s? You didn't specify. Hopefully it has the P90s, although the P100s are not too shoddy, and it's relatively easy to switch them over if so required.

I bought a used 'wine-red' Special which had the P100s and which was a little older than yours, but I made the switch to Gibson P90s soon after.

Either way a great guitar. Enjoy!

Nice! I love Specials. All the weight and pickups and pickups and quality that you need with a little less bling. I Love the angled pickguards; they have cool personality. I have the same guitar/same year/different finish and it's one of my favorites.

Enjoy the heck out of it. Congrats!

P90s. I have two of the 2012 model run, I liked the first one so much I had to buy the second when I saw a good deal on it. The plan is to convert it to mini hums and have a "Deluxe Special."

I think so. Not too fat, not too skinny. Feels just right to me but I don't have big hands. C profile.

Yeah, I haven't torn it apart yet but they sure sound like P90's.

Anybody know off hand what pot values these shipped with? Sounds a little dark so I'm thinking maybe 300k. They say Gibson on them but no values.

The combination of belly cut and neck binding is a puzzle to me. I don't remember that combination of features on Specials, then. Usually, the belly cut was on some of the cheaper, unbound versions with P-100s.

I believe this is actually a "junior special". The wine red was a GC exclusive along with the walnut finish. From what I have seen some have the belly cut, some don't. Some have "Special" on the truss rod cover, some don't. This one has cream binding that doesn't match the white colored nut. The finish goes over the binding and the nut so I assume the nut is original.

I believe you're right. I've always though "Junior Special" also indicated that Fender's marketing folks had no clue what either guitar actually was. Pick one.

Ordered me up some new 500k pots and a switch. Should be rockin' and rollin' by the weekend!

Got the new pots and switch installed. The 500k pots really made a huge difference in tone. It's like somebody took a blanket off the amp. Original ones must have been 250k or 300k. Who knows. Anyway, here's a pic in better lighting. More true to the actual color. special2.JPG

    Nice. Love those.
I had a LP special double cut faded once.
    Love the tone.
Still like to pick up a junior some day.

Congrats! I refuse to use the term "Junior Special." It's idiotic. I have the same guitar as you, with the bound baked maple neck, but in matte black. Whatever Gibson says, they're LP Specials. ;)

I also have a TV Yellow Doublecut Special, used it in the studio last night, guesting on a friend's album

The terminology has been all messed up on these.
    Originally:
JR - 1 pickup and wrap around bridge
Special - 2 pickups and wrap around bridge

Then they had to go and add the ABR bridge and stop tail piece creating the Special I(wrap around) and Special II(ABR and stop tail).

Then they started offering the JR's and Special's with either P90's or HB's.
Next they'll offer a Special with mini-buckers and create another model to confuse us more.
