At lunchtime I popped into my local music shop (HSK in Kirkcaldy) to have a chat with my friend Derek who works there. On the wall there was a lovely walnut Strat-like guitar with a birdseye maple neck.

I asked what it was and was told it was made by G Pollard, possibly in the 80s.

I asked how much it was and was stunned to find it was £399! It has EMG pickups, Sperzel tuners and a Kahler trem. The scratchplate is walnut and recessed into the body. Gorgeous! It had a few small dings but the frets looked like they had hardly been played.

They had another couple of G Pollard guitars, both Tele-style, one thinline. They were in better condition than the Strat and looked even nicer but were much more expensive, £800+.

Derek said he couldn't find anything on the internet but thought he'd made some PRSish guitars too.

I asked if I could play it and spent quarter of an hour noodling. Fantastic neck (did I mention the birdseye maple?), great to play. The guitar hung slightly differently to a Fender Strat on a strap, it sat slightly further to the right. This had the fantastic advantage of moving the volume knob out of the way of my strumming. I didn't hit it once!

I left the shop and walked up the street texting Mrs Negative about what I'd seen. Her reply? "If you want, it get. You're worth it!"

I marched back to the shop and put a dent in my credit card. I walked back to work with the guitar on my back in a cool gig bag.

    I love my wife!

I've spent the last hour rocking out. The guitar sounds great clean or with heavy distortion but I'm not as keen on the sound of the EMGs with lighter distortion (which I favour). And my Formula No 5 clone acted strangely when I switched it on (it went silent then faded in). The EMGs may end up on Ebay but I'll keep the guitar as it is until I'm sure about it.

If I have time tomorrow I'll take some photos.

    What, this guy??

Here he is playing bass, but I don't know about guitar.

Oh wait, you said G Pollard... I thought you said J Pollard. Never mind.

Are your EMG's the "real" ones (battery powered) or are they the "Select" passive ones? The passive ones are really really good for clean sounds and don't hum at all.
And can I have my spouse talk to yours about NGD's? I could use a few more...
