Seen a few of these threads posted and wondered if I'd ever get to do likewise. Anyway.....

I recently made acquaintance with a guitar. As a learner, although I knew "of" the Gretsch brand, I'd never played one - though I know they seem popular by the number of them that appear in the hands of pros on the TV.

This one was a bit different to the sparkly / shiny semi-hollow ones I've seen most regularly. It had an upside-down 4+2 tuners head (a bit like a reversed MusicMan), 21 frets, Rosewood fretboard, solid double-cutaway mahogany body (in dark cherry), one "something-tron" pickup and no Bigsby (or other whammy bar). It also looked old-school and had a few marks to prove it.

The vendor informed me it was an original 1964 Gretsch "Corvette" and that it was, originally, aimed at the "learner" market. Spot on for me, then.

I plugged it into a Fender amp and, even in my fists of ham, it made some lovely noises. It also seems to sit right as it has a slightly sculpted body - albeit that the body is only the thickness of a Gibson SG - i.e. quite thin - and the guitar is a lot lighter and easier to handle than others I have. the frets also go right to the body - similar to an SG.

I thought about it for a couple of days but, yesterday, I went back and bought it. It also came with a rather dinky and original "cardboard" case. I don't have any photos of it, yet, but might take / post some if anyone's interested.

Can't wait to get playing it......

    Ha - my wife wouldn't dare (I think....) !

Yes, I didn't know what the tail piece was called but it does resemble a trapeze. I'll post photos once I get home and can take some.

Sadly, I'm way past "mid" life

People can dump all they like! What's the point making stuff up? I just didn't take any photos when I got it home last night.

Now I just have to learn how to play it...!

Well, until last Saturday, I'd never heard of a Gretsch Corvette. If I'm honest, I don't need another guitar (and suspect that's true of many around here) but it was the first guitar where I genuinely liked the the whole package. I have some guitars where the finish is nice or I like the shape or it was a bargain, etc - but this one just wouldn't get out of my head. I hope you find one 'someday'.

That is a killer guitar! Gretsch did a reissue of sorts through their electromatic line 10 or 15 years ago, but as I understand it, for legal reasons, had to start calling them CVTs some years later.

The originals and electromatics are really cool guitars. I hope you enjoy it.
