I think it depends on whether the guitar has been kept in it's case or in open air or how "fresh" from the factory the guitar is. I've gotten quite a few brand new guitars over the years that were unquestionably nitro finish, but didn't have that "sweet" nitro smell to them. So, the presence of the smell may indicate a nitro finish, but the absence of it doesn't necessarily imply that it's not nitro. I have noticed over the years that the guitars with the strongest nitro smell seem to be the ones you get from the big online dealers where you're just shipped the sealed box as it came from the factory and the guitar was never opened or laid out on a sales floor.
