I have fiddled around with bass very little, and have had a couple but nothing that really stuck...

I just got this home and I don't even have my own pictures yet, these are from the craigslist ad...

I think we may have a winner... I do wish it were a different color..

I'm searching for the right type of strings for them.

What do ya'll with these use?

I'm wondering if I should go with flat wounds.

    Got these for $11.35

I found some info on the interwebz, that said these were a top choice for strings.

LaBella makes flats and rounds specifically for Danelectro basses and their small tuner holes. The Rotos may work out fine for you, though.

On that bass personally I would play rounds or something like half rounds or a pressure wounds but that's me. My thinking based on a personal experience with one long long ago is that flats are a bit too dead and thuddy on one.

Hip factor increases exponentially for you when you wear that bass. I think a tad 'dead' and 'thuddy' suits this design and pickups.
It is not a slap or jazz bass, ya know.
I go for strings with silk in the core, like labella has.

Nice bass, and personally, I think it's a very nice color.

I'd kinda like to own a longhorn, because they're cool and I'm a lipstick pup fan, though I rarely play bass.

I have the Rotosound round wounds on the way, and I saved a set of Labella flat wounds in my eBay cart.

From what I understand you are supposed to change bass strings once every two decades, to keep the mojo in.

So the bridge has the typical reissue problem of the bridge sagging in the middle.

The intonation is tolerable, so when the new strings come in I'll straighten the sag, and add a middle adjustment screw to prevent future sagging.

I did replace the bridge on my U2 because the intonation was not to my liking, and it sagged as well.

My 12 string has the adjustable and individually intonatable saddles so I'm leaving it.

    One sweet ride!
I always wanted the foam green longhorn.
I love that yellow guitar with the black/white pickguard would be a great Ska go-to

The trouble is it was more than just a "tad bit" dead and thumpy with flats. The short scale doesn't help.

Those pickups have a nice "growl" to them in low register that comes out nicely with rounds and maybe to a slightly lesser extent with a pressure wound that seemed to me lost with flats. So just a suggestion based on experience.

But I do agree that they are very unique and "hip" kind of basses. Fun to play as well of you have an active playing style or play a lot of funk. I wish I still had the two Dano basses I once owned.

The roto rounds arrived a couple days ago and they are thinner than what was on it.

I unsagged the bridge and adjusted the neck and oiled the fretboard, and I'm in business.
